Hi there. Recently my bunny Chewie has been suffering from a wet semi-damp nose. We are awaiting a vet appointment now. Could this be allergy? No crusties on his paws. He doesn’t have white, yellow, or green discharge. No red eyes etc. I’m not sure what to think.

The first image was the first day I noticed it. He had been eating veggies and drinking water. He also sneezed that day. I haven’t heard him sneeze since. We recently switched our buns’ hay due to a situation at the moment. We had an emergency and had to make an abrupt change. He is drinking and eating normally. He is binkying as well and acting normal. The second image is a day later. Nose is still damp, but not nearly as wet as before.

Yes it could be dampness from the dust of the new hay. Rabbits dive head first into hay, so the human equivalent is parting very old curtains. Lots of dust is going to get up the nose, so the body naturally produces snot to keep things clean and get things out of the nose.

If it seems like a harmless amount, it may just need to be a result of the new hay, until you revert back to your old one. If it seems to be getting worse or negatively impacts your rabbit’s well being, consider shaking off the dust prior to giving the hay out.

Thank you for responding. I think it is irritation or an allergy based on his behavior. I can also mist the hay with water right? That should help him?

Water can cause mold in hay, so you can try it if you’d like, as long as you make sure not to make it too wet and make sure to dispose of any hay that doesn’t dry out.
