when i had my first rabbits, i got very lucky.  i got willow from a pet store, fell in love with her, decided she needed a friend, immediately brought home two more.  all were does; i didn’t want babies, and didn’t know you could have a rabbit fixed!  i knew nothing about bonding, how difficult trios are, how dangerous bonding unspayed females can be.  i just tossed them all together and they all lived happily ever after.

now, i keep readin all these bonding horror stories, and i’m totally freaked out!  i was going to start bonding nut puppet and rue after nut had healed from his snip.  well, now i know not to do that.  i will wait until rue is spayed, too, probably in late july.  then i have to wait for her to heal.  THEN i can let them meet.  i get a little queasy at the thought!  i think it should go smoothly.  due to space limitations, they are already housed side by side, and they already share the same play area (at different times, obviously).  there’s been absolutely no signs of agression.  i’ve caught rue sticking her nose in puppet’s cage, or out the bars of her own cage, for grooming.  they frequently stretch out on either side of the cage bars.  they even share the same favorite hidey hole in the play room.  yet the thought of letting them meet, with no cage between them, makes me a nervous wreck!

i can’t wait to start, though.  for one, i can make the pen a lot bigger once the second cage isn’t there taking up space.  i always feel so bad for the bun left in the cage while the other one is out.  and i look forward to being able to snuggle with rue while puppet runs amok.  i love the thought of tiny rue snuggling with giant nut puppet.  not to mention how much easier it will be not having to rotate play time, clean two cages, ect.

Don’t worry – you may get lucky and they will bond quickly. However at least now you know if you have some bonding issues you have support from the BB forum and other on-line resources to get help from (bonding articles).

Mossling- You sound exactly like me! I’m getting both mine spayed/neutered soon. They’ve been side by side for the past 3 months and seem to love each other but I’m also scared at the thought of letting them together without bars in between! I think mine will happen before July so I will let you know how it goes!!

Make sure there is a gap between their cages, if its a single wall between them, they can still do the deed

It’s definitely intimidating! I was certainly intimidated before I started. I had a fairly easy bond (just about a month), but I’m still scared thinking about having to do it again some day. haha
