Mr Bingley went to the vet last week for his eye (he scratched it on something) and has a check-up tomorrow. I was putting in his eye drops earlier and petting him and noticed a lump on his back. It wasn’t like a ball, but like extra layers of skin a little larger than a quarter. Even though his fur is black on his back, its gray where it is closest to his skin, except in this spot. It goes from black to gray and then back to black. Its hard to tell if his skin is black as well. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? I’ll be sure to ask the vet tomorrow.

And also, he had blood tests done about 5 months ago. Wouldn’t something bad turn up in those??

Could something bad happen so fast too?

I got a better look. His skin is black and shiny there. I have a bad feeling about this…

I’ve had rabbits with fatty tumors that were removed without incident….hopefully that’s all it is with Bing. Please keep us posted.

Is it possible that its a birthmark that I’ve never noticed? I can’t seem to find anything on the RHS that sounds anything like this under skin conditions.

It is so hard to say without seeing it and feeling it- just try to keep positive thoughts until you know for sure- and please keep us updated!

It looks like a human mole or something. His hair is growing through it and that hair is a little more coarse. Its not really a bump now that I’ve examined it so much…Kinda like a centimeter thick black/purple pancake on his skin…I’m not really sure how to describe it another way. And its very hard to take a picture of unless I shave his hair off, and I don’t want to do that. After a while of poking and shining a light on the same spot, he stopped licking my leg to turn around and bite the flashlight. I don’t think I was hurting him but that he was just annoyed.

Is he shedding? I got super scared by something that sounds exactly like what you’re describing the first time Sammy started shedding. He shed the hair off in a spot on his back, and when it started growing back in it looked like he had a dark brown mole on his skin with coarse hair growing through it. If that’s what it is, it’s just his normal hair growing back in, but looking coarse while it’s short. I thought it was an abnormal skin growth too but it only looked like one to my eye inexperienced of shedding.

How long have you had him? Either way the vet would be able to tell you for sure tomorrow.

Does it feel like there is something stuck to his skin with hair growing out of it?

I showed it to the vet today and she said that there was nothing to worry about!!!

She looked at it for a while and felt it and said there didn’t seems to be anything under the skin, but that he just has a spot of different pigment on his skin. She said that normally, it occurs under the lighter fur, but it was under his black fur and there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with it. The fact that hair was growing through it and not falling off of it was also very good. She said just to keep an eye on it, but that she was sure it was just a phenomenon on Bing that his pigment was in such an unorthodox place! It makes him even more unique! I plan to keep an eye on it and have already measured it with pictures the best I can, but I think everything will be be okay after all.

And, I got him insurance last week, so I’m just excited that he is protected and ready for a long and happy life.

Otti, I’ve had him since June 2010. He was born on 4/1/10.

Yeah, that sounds just like Sammy’s spot that freaked me out too Like your vet said, should be normal! It’s just the first time you’re seeing it since you’ve had him 6 months
