I was in this asian food store the other day and they had this herb along with the parsley called ‘Palek’ it smells just like corriander and it is very cheap, 39p for a HUGE bunch of it does anyone know what it is or if its safe for our buns? I have never heard of it before but i didnt want to chance giving it to them before i knew it was safe, everything in there is written in a different language (im sorry i dont know which language) and so i dont know is ‘Palek’ just means corriander in another language? It smells the same and looks the same just bigger than the corriander from the stores. Anyone heard of it?

I think it’s spinach but not sure – heard of Palek Paneer in Indian food which is cheese and spinach, I think.

Palek is indeed spinach (in Indian food). However in an Asian market hmmmm.

Well it does make sense that it would be in an Asian market since India is in Asia. I bet it tastes good kimberlyanddarren – let us know if you try it.

I am thinking that maybe what you are describing is Basil.

Sarita – What I was thinking is that the herb might be considered something else and was mistakenly labeled by the grocer since it is not a “specialized market” i.e. Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Thai market. So yes it makes sense it is there but if it is a multi-cultural market, the owner or buyer may not know better.

If humans can eat it and it’s green and leafy, its probably safe.
