Hello! My new ten week old Holland lop has a weird looking foot. I’ve noticed it since I got him (at 8 weeks old). He walks and hops fine and is extremely active but I’m worried it could bother him in the future. I many just be paranoid and he probably just has weird fur but I would love your inputs. The first image is the foot, and the second is his other, normal looking, foot. When I look at the undersides of his feet, it looks like the thick fur used to walk on is to far off to the side and there’s almost like a bald spot where it should be from him walking (hard to see in pic). His other foot looks normal. I can’t tell if something is wrong with the fur or his actual foot… is there such a this as bad fur? Again, he walks fine but I’m worried it could develop into a sore hock or something as he ages. Also if it’s a bone problem (which I’m assuming not sense he moves fine) I’m worried it could get worse as he grows. All responses welcome please give me your input!

Welcome to being a new bunny parent, and obsessing over all things! 🙂 I know how you feel!

But I think his foot looks normal to me! If you’re concerned just keep an eye on it, but I don’t see anything alarming at the moment. I’m guessing (completely guessing) that when you got him he still had baby fluff and was likely on a wire bottom cage? And now that he’s on solid flooring his fur is flattening out a bit.

Hmm… looking at the photo at the bottom of his foot, it does look like what Dana is describing. Looking from the top though, it does look like his foot is rolled. One way is to feel his foot when he is standing (or at least pushing back against your hand). Does it feel normal when compared to the other foot? Does the bottom of his foot rest flat on the floor?

It reminds me of a pronated foot like people get. Like he is holding his weight predominately on inner side of the hock rather then evenly across it.  The more pale fur on side of his feet does show more on right hock. Perhaps he had an injury when even younger and it’s healed a bit askew. Possibly up higher on the leg.

Has he been to a vet before?  I know it’s not an easy option currently with the pandemic. It’s likely not something that needs urgent care but it would be good for a vet to check over when possible.

Thanks for the reply’s! I didn’t see the cage he was living in, so it may have been wired bottomed. It does confuse me though why only one hock is like that and not the other if that is the reason. I’ll try to check if the foot lays flat, he moves a lot so it’s hard to get him to stay still! To my knowledge, he hasn’t been to the vet yet. It doesn’t seem to be bothering him so I’m thinking I’ll just bring it up when he gets neutered.

I was going to ask about neutering…. I can see he already has his “plums” lol

Ok… so it looks like on his right hock, when standing, one or two of his toes is off the ground. I really hope this doesn’t affect him in the long run. Has anyone even heard of this happening before?

There are some possible explanations. His foot could have been squished or caught up on something in the womb. Or he could have suffered an injury while he was very young and it has healed. If it doesn’t bother him, then I’m sure he has simply adapted to it and doesn’t really know any different. The only concern is that he may develop arthritis later on, but there really isn’t anything you can do about that.

Ok… thanks. I’ll just cross my fingers and try not to worry about it I guess.
