Hello, I am happy to be a new bunny lover! I adopted Emmitt from a large family a couple of weeks ago and he seems to have wrmed up to me now. But today I put him on my bed so we could hang out and he did some weird stuff. First he was normal and was curiously looking and hopping about my bed and then he started acting as though he was digging. Then he would push down and out with his front paws making a motion that looked like he was smoothing out my comforter.  And then without me noticing, he peed! I was wondering if this was a bahavior that I should look out for in the future signifying that he will pee then too, or if he was doing all those things because he was in a new spot. But he is really good about using his litterbox so I would be surprised if he peed on my bed again. Any thoughts would be great ! Thanks!

Many buns (in fact, I would even say most buns) will pee on your bed as it smells so much like you. I’m not sure if the digging is a hint that he’s going to pee – Cadbury digs and smoothes out the blankets I have for her to play with, but she’s never followed that up by peeing.

Yup, all my bunnies love smoothing and digging blankies…and peeing on beds!! LOL

Best would be to not allow your bunny on your bed!!

            And Welcome to binkybunny!!

That’s all normal behavior. I agree with K&K about not allowing him on the bed either.

sounds great! Thanks so much for your help! Any suggestions for fun toys for him to play with? I have some paper and cardboard boxes around for him but I wasn’t sure about anything else.

You know whats funny is one of my bunny girls peed on my bed last night, which she hadn’t done for the first few months she was in my room, and just before she was also digging on the bed..guess it is a warning!

In addition to paper and cardboard boxes, paper bags are also fun for bunnies. You can also look at the “store” on this site to see some fun bunny toys, and also http://www.busybunny.com offers some fun toys. You can give your bunnies baskets made of willow wood as well, the problem is though that when you get those from regular stores its really difficult to know if they have been treated with any chemicals or paint.

Digging boxes are great for little diggers!  Just fill the box w/ balled up or shredded paper and let him dig away.  I have several toys from the binky bunny store…anything willow tends to be a big hit for my buns.  Leo loves digging and smoothing out his blankets & rag rugs.  Those are toys in themselves.  Welcome to Binky Bunny!

Welcome to Binky Bunny Coley! I totally agree with what everyone else had said. Also, have you thought about saving up to have him neutered or is he neutered already? If he is not neutered these problems will likely become worse. How old is your new guy and do you have any pics to share? We love pictures!

most bunnies will pee on your bed because of the smells of you on there the digging is normal i think because of the surface or perhaps he is just a bunny who digs often (some are diggers, some chewers just depends on the bunny), i wouldnt be too bothered he peed once but just watch him and if he goes to do it again put him down next to the litterbox

my bunnies love playing on the bed. but if i leave them too long they tend to pee on it. prolly cuz they get to thinking they should mark the space after awhile? so i usually give them a little while to play among the blankets and them put them back on the floor. they do love digging around but im afraid they’ll rip something. plus too much playing and i have to vacuum fur off the bed! otherwise id be sleeping in it! sometimes they will take it upon themselves to jump up on the bed so i get the feeling they like it up there. such funny little creatures!

hello everone thanks so much for all the great tips! I have refrained from putting Emmitt on my bed and have moved onto the floor while on the computer so I can be more at his level. He loves cardboard boxes, but i noticed that he eats the cardboard so I have limited the amount that he has. I just got a phone book for him to shred because word on the street is that buns love that! Also, I will get some pictures up of him once I get my camera back from my sister. When I adopted Emitt his previous owner told me that he was three years old and not neutered. This worries me because ideally I would love to have another bun. Also, she told me he was male, but from the reading I have been doing, I am under the impression that female’s dewlaps are usually larger than males, and his is pretty big. ( he uses it as a pillow) I was wondering, this might sound kind of silly, how do I check if he is neutered? And is it too late to have him have to surgery now? And it is impossible to bond two bunnies if one is not neutered? I know I have a lot of questions but I only have two more One: Emitt spends a lot of time in his cage even though his door is always open. Liks right now i have his toys strewn about me and he is just sitting in there How can I get him to come out more? And two, he doesn’t seem to be eating his greens much. I am pretty sure his previous owner only fed him pellets so he is kind of over weight. I have brought him down to 1/4th cup of pellets in the morning, and he has fresh hay and fresh greens all day. Although he loves the hay, he barely touches the greens. Is this okay? Thanks so much for any information you guys have ! Sorry about the rush of questions, but I just want Emitt to be as happy and healthy as possible!

                              LOL lots of questions!!

Ok, one; I don’t think there is an age they *have* to be neutered by. Once he’s seen by your vet he/she can determine if he’s in good enough health to have the surgery done, and I don’t think three years is too long.

two; It’s not impossible to bond unaltered animals, just harder. Also if he’s going to stay unaltered you’ll want to ensure that the bunny you try to bond him with has been altered for over a month (bunnies can be fertile up to a month after the surgery).

three: I don’t think you can easily tell if he’s neutered…He might not even be a he!

four: My new bunny is shy, so when I take him out I close his cage for a small time period so he *has* to be brave and explore. You could try this!

five; To encourage greens offer a variety (though offer each new one slowly) and usually you have to offer something a few times before they’ll even taste it!! Refreash hay a few times a day to encourage him to eat more hay. I don’t know why this works but it does!

It took me some time to get my buns to eat hay & veggies regularly.  Now they are veggie hounds/ lil’ piggies.  I got this suggestion from Binky…

I feed the pellets in the morning and keep the hay bins full all the time.  In the evening I remove the pellet bowl and dump the left over pellets.  I then feed them their bunny salad.  This forced them to get into the veggie habit.  Initially I was very scared about doing this…I thought they might starve to death over night.  But it worked it forced them to eat their veggies.  Also, they started to eat more hay.  However, I have to follow this schedule to a tee!  If they don’t get their veggies by 6pm, Leo starts throwing things around his cage to show his anger.
