Olivia really seems to have lost weight. I’m getting very concerned. She just looks and feels thinner. I weighed her on Saturday at home and she weighs 3 lbs and 10 ounces which seems pretty normal for a bunny her size. I’m going to weigh her every week for a couple of weeks and if she’s lost weight again we will go to the vet. I was going to make an appointment to get her spayed but I think I will put it off. She just reminds me of a model who was already thin but lost too much weight.

Should I be worried? What are the reasons a rabbit might suddenly lose weight? I’m not saying it was sudden, she’s so tiny, it doesn’t take much weight to lose to notice a difference. Is what I’m doing okay? Monitering her for now? I’m making sure she always has plenty of hay in her cage all day so she can eat whenever she’s hungry. She is eating her normal amount and pooping (lots!) and acting her normal, hyper self.

I think if it’s a significant amount then you should worry. Otherwise I would imagine that their weight fluctuates much like ours due to activity – is she an active rabbit?

As far as reasons, there could be so many reasons if it’s medical that I don’t think anyone could really venture a very good guess since there’s so many things a vet would factor in other than weight loss and most likely would want to do a blood test or check her teeth, etc…just hard to say for certain based on weight loss in my opinion.

I do think that keeping a log of her weight is a good idea and if you feel it is a problem you can discuss it with your vet.

Yes, she is a very active rabbit but she only has a few hours run time in the evening so she’s not running around all day, although her cage is big enough to hop around comftorably but she’s not binkying and zooming most of the day.

Would it have anything to do with her growing a winter coat you mentioned in other post? I remember reading somewhere to increase food a little in winter (can’t recall specific reason). But I imagine they use a bit of dietry protein to produce a new coat. (?)
