Hello, my bunny has been having problems with weepy eyes since late 2024. He’s an 8 year old neutered lop. He had an annual exam and the vet didn’t think much of it in december 2024, I didn’t either. I assumed it was because of pollen or saharan dust. In autumn 2025 his eyes got worse and he developed a runny nose and started sneezing as well. The vet prescribed him some antibiotics which helped with everything except his eyes.

The same thing happened again about two months later, this time he got antibiotics and eye drops. Neither worked and he started to eat less hay and become lethargic. He had his molars trimmed/floated and it was instantly an improvement with everything except his eyes. He got prescribed a different eye drops, which did not work.

That was december 2025 and in january 2026 he started to have a runny nose and again and sneezing and eating less hay. The vet saw some sharp points on his molars so he had his teeth trimmed/floated again.

It’s been less than a week since that surgery and nothing has improved except he’s eating more hay but still not as much as he normally would. I’m stretched thin financially with all the vet visits and I’m hoping someone can help pin point what might be wrong so I can ask the vet to check exactly. At his last visit the vet suspected allergies and wants to try an antihistamine if the trimming didn’t help so I’ll contact the clinic about that. I don’t have much hope about the allergies though because I’m not sure what he could be allergic to. I’m worried about him and any suggestions would be appreciated thanks!

Sorry to hear about these issues. Is your vet an exotics/rabbit specialist? They should be able to offer better diagnosis.

It could potentially be a number of things but I’ve often heard these issues being linked to tear duct blockages, allergies and dental abscess or tooth root problems, which aren’t the same as over grown molars. I am not a vet but just sharing problem I’ve heard to be associated with runny eyes, other than upper respiratory infections.

Hello, yes the vet is an exotic vet and I’ ve been going to them for years. Thanks for your insight I never thought about tear duct blockage before. I made an appointment for him at a different exotic vet next week. Hopefully a second opinion can help. thanks again!

I agree. What you’re describing sounds more like something is going on in the sinuses. Tooth roots invading the sinus cavity can lead to chronic bacteria buildup, blocked tear ducts, ear infections, etc.

Hello, elongated tooth roots was what I feared. I made an appointment for him with a different vet to see if maybe a second opinion can help and an xray to check his teeth. Thanks,

I agree with the others, but just wanted to mention bunnies can be allergic to hay/hay dust. Sometimes switching hay (Timothy to orchard grass or something) can help. Unfortunately, it sounds like there may be a more serious issue going on since its a recurring issue. I’m so sorry to hear about your poor bun(and your poor finances!)

Hello, thank you! I did switch his hay from timothy to orchard after his teeth floating, unfortunately it didn’t help him. I made him another vet appointment and hopefully he can get the correct diagnosis and can recover soon, I miss him running around everywhere and getting into trouble. Thanks again,
