We have a bunny room. Now what should I put in it? Haha.

So we cleaned out one of our spare bedrooms recently and have decided to give it to our bunnies. Right now it’s pretty bare. It just has both their cages in there. We have food and water bowls outside of the cages and litter boxes in both the cages. We have some toilet paper rolls with hay stuck inside of it, and a couple of surrogate/stuffed bunnies. Other than that I’m not sure what to put in there. I always worry about my boys being bored. I need some good toy suggestions. I’ve noticed they have started chewing on our baseboards. I bought some wooden chew toys… that have been completely ignored! What are some good toys to help with their need to chew? Also are there some good ”necessities” to put in the room? Should I set up an x-pen in the room if I need to have the buns separated for some reason? 

 

Also what should I keep in their cages? Their cages are not very large, I think I’d rather just have x-pens but I”m keeping the cages until I can find something better. The doors to the cages are always open, they are never ever locked in their cages.

 

Also the flooring in their room is bamboo, so it’s wooden so the bunnies kind of slip and slide on it occasionally. My husband suggested putting down a really large throw rug in the room. (A cheap one of course, because I am sure they will dig/chew it) is this a good idea so that the bunnies can have some type of surface they can run on easily? 

 

I also don’t have anything in the room the buns can climb on. I’ve read that buns love to climb, what are some good things to use to make climbing things? 

Also do rabbits like beds? I’ve given them a fleece blanket, but they enjoy peeing on it all the time so I have to constantly wash it. Or do buns not mind sleeping on the floor?

At the top of the page on the green menu bar, there’s a “galleries” link where there should be a few good pictures of bunny rooms if you want any ideas! A rug would be a great idea so that they can run, but make sure they don’t eat anything they chew off. As for beds, my bunnies just shove aside any nice soft material I give them (they used to pee on it too but not anymore) and seem to prefer to sleep on cold hard plastic…soooo I guess it’s up to them, lol! Some people’s bunnies seem to like sleeping on pet beds etc, so I suppose it sort of depends on the bunny.

Are you going to cover the baseboards to protect them from chewing? That would be my first step. Is your goal to remove the cages and just allow them free run of the entire space? You’ll definitely need a carpeted surface if they cannot navigate the floors. I have a large 8×10 foot carpet I purchased from a wholesale club (BJ’s, similar to Costco) for $60. It is low-pile and has held up very well. Plus, it’s heavy, so I can vacuum it without sucking it up. If it does not take up the entire floor, maybe in the open space you can put a remnant of linoleum and have that be the feeding/watering area.

If anyone is handy with tools, you can make a nice large wood platform with a hidey house underneath. This way they can be inside or on top. Bunnies aren’t really “climbers”, but some do enjoy jumping up onto surfaces. This would also satisfy some of the need to nibble as this is large and STATIONARY (the key to chew toys is buns prefer if they are heavy and non-movable).

This thread has pics of my bunny platform. We made it just large enough to fit the xpen, but you could even do it longer or wider since you have an entire room.

(In some of the pics you can see how the xpen is on the rug, we cut it down to fit the space, but it’s holding up very well and protects our “real” carpet.)

I used to house Riley in my laundry room, and I got some indoor/outdoor carpeting from Menards for like $10 to give Riley traction. It’s a big roll/rug made for on people’s decks or patios. The nice thing about it – you can take it outside and hose it down!

LucyTwoBunz posted these pics of an impressive play area. In a bunny room you could have something similar set up permanently.

 

Cardboard boxes are great because they hide in it and like to chew on it too. Also willow items.

Ditto Beka on the chew items. Something heavy and stationary like a branch of safe wood.
