Hi everyone, if you remember.. awhile back I posted about how we couldn’t find a bunny and our local rescue wasn’t getting back to us.  Well, a month later she finally did and she told us our best option might be to go to our local animal rescue and visit the bunnies and see who we love.  We found a beautiful little guy named Escarole.  He is brindle colored and after he is spayed this weekend we pick him up early next week,  I am so excited.  He is so sweet and you can tell he really wants human connection.  I cant wait to show him to you.

I have some new owner questions.  I found a safe/unsafe veggie fruit list but I have not found a safe unsafe wood list.  Does anyone know where I can get one?  I would love any pointers on litter training also! Thanks a lot!

I’m so excited for you! Thats so great that you were finally able to find one to rescue. Escarole is such a cute name too.

As far as woods go, I usually stick to apple wood, and willow wood. My bunnies really love the willow wood, and sometimes will go for the apple sticks.

As far as litter training, I just try to set up my expectations from the beginning. When i first get bunnies, no matter where their stray poops go, I pick them up and put them in the litterbox. I also clean up any pee with vinegar, and then I shop vac the cage floor about once a day just to keep it super clean. This usually helps the bunny understand where the poops should go. Do keep in mind that in the beginning, your bunny will probably be excited to have a new home, and don’t be surprised if he is leaving some territorial poops and pees around.

Yay! Bet you can’t wait for next week to get here already! I find it kind of odd the rescue contact directed you to a local rescue and not to come in and see their own rabbits…? Oh well, sounds like you found your bunny.

              That’s wonderful!
I can’t wait to see pix.
I especially like learning that they will neuter him first, let him recover and then give him to you. That’s the right kind of rescue care.

Do you mean wood to eat? (Apple tree sticks – if natural, then no pesticide sprays please.) Unpeeled willow sticks are a favorite chew toy for bunnies. Peeled willow too, but they seem to all pounce on the unpeeled.

The best wood for litter I think is Aspen. You can get it in pellet form at pet stores, or if you little guy prefers a softer bed, they come in shavings that are safe. We have lots of fans of pine pellets (NOT pine shavings though) here, but they have to be untreated so it’s something of a debate. For non-wood litter I can safely recommend Yesterday’s News or Carefresh.

Head up this page to the green banner and browse through the drop down menus for lots of good pointers on your set up and care.

Update! We are going to be getting two buns We fell in love with another girl Parsley when we were there. She is already spayed and had a family say they wanted her and then never come back. She is fearful and needs some rehab and we are willing to be patient and sensitive. We are going to give them their own spaces and hopefully they will one day get along, but we know it might not happen. I am very excited so I am babbling.

I cant wait until they call about the neuter!! AHHH
