Watery eye?

 Opal has a very watery eye this evening.  I’m not sure what to do about it.  I called the vet but it was after hours.  I expect to hear from him tomorrow morning.  She seems to be acting normally.  I didn’t notice a wet nose or any kind of fever.  

I’m worried though.  Is there anything I can do for her besides massage the area with a wet towel?  I’m running the air cleaner downstairs in case there’s dust in the air.    

I’m supposed to go out tomorrow night with friends and I’m pretty sure I’m canceling if it doesn’t clear up.  I know it can be dangerous, but I guess I don’t know how concerned I should be?  I think I just need reassurance that she’ll be ok.  I’m such a worried bunnymom.  

I think I spotted a little red spot in the corner of her eye but I’m not sure if it was blood, or just how it looks normally.  I don’t usually go poking at her near her eye because I’m clumsy and afraid I’m gonna poke her.  Bah.  I’m so worried.  Please someone tell me to calm down.

I’m sorry your rabbit has a watery eye! It can be worrisome when your rabbit develops something out of the blue. I think you did the right thing in calling your vet; a runny eye can indicate many issues in rabbits, ranging from nasal/upper respiratory infections to dental or ear problems. It could even be that she poked herself in the eye with hay or something equally minor. If she is still acting normally, eating fine, and pooping, I think you’re safe until tomorrow. I think cleaning the area gently is a good idea, but don’t do it too often; you don’t want to further irritate the eye. I would try to leave it alone but keep watching her behavior until tomorrow, then bring her to the vet’s office for a check-up.

I know it’s very easy to worry, but I don’t think you’ve reached that point yet with Opal. Just keep an eye on her to make sure she’s comfortable and get her into the vet tomorrow.

 Thanks for the advice!  But I just ran into a big problem: my vet is gone until Monday, like gone gone.  On vacation.  She’s still weepy, but again, her behavior is pretty normal.  I cleaned the area a bit, as much as she would let me anyway.  I think she was a little weirded out by the towel.  

I called the vet office again and they said that they can’t even give me health advice since my vet is the only one who’s seen her.  They said that if it’s an emergency I should call a different hospital.  

Now what do I do?  I canceled my plans this evening just so I can keep an eye on her.  I’ve never dealt with weepy eye before, how do I tell if it’s an emergency or not?  I guess I should just watch her behavior and check to see if her nose is runny or if it goes to the other eye?  And check her temp?  

I love my vet, but I’m a little frustrated that they can’t even tell me if/when I should call the other hospital.    

I guess I should just wait to see if she gets worse and then call the emergency people?

I don’t think it’s an emergency at this point – I would wait and take her into the vet when she gets back.

Nova had a watery eye off and on for a while before I took her in. I figured it was her teeth, despite her still eating like a little piggy. The vet told me on the off chance it keeps weeping I should put a warm (NOT HOT!) compress on it to help it. So you might try that in the meantime until your vet can get back to you and give her a thorough check up.

Emergencies are really around eating/pooping/peeing/drinking and any trauma to the body. An eye infection or scratch or irritation doesn’t sound too terrible-I think you could still go out. Keep an eye on it (no pun intended) and just ensure everything else is normal until you can see the vet
