Hi, I’m new here. I’m Helenor and I got my first rabbit, Lago, 4 months ago.

I have a question regarding water and water bottles. I’ve had problems with leaking bottles so I recently tried switching Lago’s water bottle to the Lixit lever valve type, but she did not know how to use the lever, so I returned it. I’ve tried the super pet top fill with a spring in the sipper with a ball to also keep from dripping. So far, I haven’t really seen her drinking from it much unless I go over and push the ball in to show her. I’ve been trying to monitor the water level, but I’m not sure how much she should be drinking daily. She’s a small rabbit, under 2 pounds. Will she be okay with this new water bottle?

        Thanks

You can flavor the spout to make her get the idea. Rub some of her favorite fruit on the tip. If you find that the spring is too stiff and hard for her to push in, get a different bottle or a bowl. Biting at the spout will be a sign of her not getting enough water from it.

One thing that will help make sure a bottle doesn’t leak is to make sure to fill it RIGHT up each time, this way the pressure in the bottle will help keep water in the bottle and not leaking is when not in use.
I use some cheap water bottles, and don’t have an issue with leaks b/c of this. You can also try a dish or just place a dish under the bottle as well. My rabbits all have different drinking amount, two boys go through more then a cup a day while others maybe only half of that (per 2 bunnies).

You might also consider giving her a water bowl instead – maybe she would prefer that – all my rabbits have water bowls instead of bottles.

My buns have both a bowl and a bottle, they prefer using the bowl. I like having the bottle as back up in case one of them spills the bowl though

Petzy: Hm. Maybe I’ll smear some apple on the ball. But for some reason it seems like she thinks I activate it. When I go over to touch the ball and test it, she runs up and starts drinking.

Andi: I filled up her bottles all the way, but I might have a defective vacuum bottle.

Sarita: She wouldn’t touch the bowl and then she accidentally knocked it over later.

I also wanted a non-leak bottle good for travel. I sometimes go visit my parents for a while and bring her along. I like the new bottle because it won’t leak all over the cage in the car and it would allow her to have her water in case she wants to drink.

                  Thanks for the replies!

I’ve heard that rabbits prefer the bowl.

I have switched from the bottle to the bowl – mainly because it was loud, lol.
My bunny LOVESSSSSSSSSssss the bowl and it is cute when they drink from it.. lol.

                    Your bunny is very cute
