I am looking at a new water bottle for my bunny.  I have one of the typical water bottles that sometimes leak, and make noise when they drink- although noise it not an issue due to cage location.

I saw there is a new type of bottle out on the market that does not use ball bearings and is reported not to leak.  Does anyone else use this??  It is more expensive but not so expensive that it is unrealistic.  I just wanted to get everyones opinion on this before I buy.  I like the thought of a water bottle that does not leak and should not "fail" at times causing the rabbit to be unable to get water.  The top fill feature makes no difference to me as I would have to take it off the cage to rinse and refill anyway.

        Thanks-

        Julie

Hi Julie, back when I was volunteering at a rabbit rescue they tried those as an experiment and trouble was, the rabbits were not able to use them very well, most couldn’t figure them out and ended up chewing on the stem in frustration to get water. But that was jsut my experience with them and actually they aren’t all that new, I think they took them off the market for a while. Do they have a good return policy at the store where you will buy it? You know so you can test it for yourself?

They don’t look that efficient just because of the angle of the spout thing but I have never used one so I really don’t know.  I use a 32 oz bottle made by Oasis and have never had it fail.  I hate it when the cage gets wet from the drips so I always make sure there is something underneath to catch the drips!

I have just recently purchaced this one for my rabbit that has a water reservoir and a bowl so when they drink it automatically fills.. I bought it at Petsmart for 10$ it looks like this one http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751047&cp=&view=all&sr=1&origkw=water&kw=water&parentPage=search&keepsr=1 except the bowl opening is a little lower (made for cats)..

it is working very nicely and they are drinking a lot now! Lilly used to try to tear the ball bearing one off the wall bc she wasn’t getting enough.. although yesterday the internal water level got to low (so the thing got light weighwise) and I came home to find one of them had tipped it over.. I have a back up ball bearing one in place, though.

I had a lixit water bottle.  However rambunctious Leo broke it!  The hubby got a new one….super pet (?)  Anyway, I found I wasn’t filling it every 2 days…turns out the thingy wasn’t working to deliver water.  I know someone on this site had that issue before.  I replaced the tubey thing w/ the one from the lixit.  So far so good…but I was way freaked out.

I did buy the water buddy water bottle to try it and have been very happy with it.  The only way it leaks is if something gets propped against it- cardboard tunnel, etc.  I feel like I am more able to tell how much water she is drinking as there is no leaking.

She figured it out easily- the just has the move a “stick” instead of moving a ball bearing.  She is young, and I showed her how to get the water- so that could be why she did not have any problems.

Lillybear I have the exact same type of thing. It’s made for cats, but my girls love it.

Rupert however cannot figure out a bowl, so good thing I had a water bottle!

Hahahaha – Rupert can’t figure out a bowl? How funny! All my buns have bowls, but its true that the end up with water allll over their lips and whiskers after they drink so they kind of do a *drink drink* *groom groom* *drink drink* *groom groom*

LOL yeh, he would just stand on the edge of the bowl (a weighted ceramic bowl with low sides) until it tipped….then he’d groom himself and go looking for water!!! He was so relieved when I gave him a bottle! LOL

I had a refilling water bowl for our other pets before- the dogs and cats- and it scared the heck out of my dog every time the air bubbles had to gurgle thru to the top when she was drinking.  I could hear her toenails booking it out of the kitchen…..  It was kinda funny that the cats were unphased and the dog was freaked out.

A Penn Plax Small Animal Flip’n’Fill 32 oz water bottle I got on eBay for $6.99 + 5.00 shipping just arrived, I just easily screwed the plastic nut into the housing between the wires of Buddie’s pen, and he was just drinking from it. It is absolutely dripless, leakless. There’s a little tube that doesn’t dispense to water til the animal pumps it in and out within the spring loaded tube that works pretty easily although it does make some noise when Buddie’s pumping it and drinking the water. The bottle is blue plastic to avoid algae from growing in the water in the sun. It holds 32 oz, quite a quantity of water. Buddie seems to prefer it over my Ferplast 600cc water bottle & its faucet type fountain. So far, so good, for bunnies looking for an ideal dripless water bottle. I was considering the Water Buddy but was concerned about the zinc content in the brass fount, toxic to birds and maybe small animals.

I have the Water Buddy water bottle and was so pleased with it, I actually bought 2 more! I swear by them, they’re great! The only time I see a little water on the floor is if they drink it and it drips out of their mouth as they’re drinking.

It sounds like the one I bought many months ago, as did Bunnytowne, because it went off the market for a while. I was really excited to try it, and Sammy didn’t want to use it as long as she had her bowl next to it. She once ate the banana I smeared on it to start her, then ignored it. I think it’s good for no drips, but Herself has her preference and that’s that. Her water dish says DIVA on the bottom, btw.

Those bottles are no longer on the market- the brass fittings became too expensive to make and still be cost effective.  Cotton has hers and loves it- Griffin and Schroeder have bigger regular bottles as Grifin drinks more and Schroeder SHOULD drink as much as possible due to his cow poop syndrome.
