I started giving Daisy fresh veggies this yesterday. I gave her celery to start with mainly because my mom had some and wasn’t going to use it. She loved it. I know you are supposed to give it to them for a week to see if it bothers their GI system. I am planning on doing this. But today I had been gone for around 12 hours and usually when I get home she only has about 1 inch of water left in her bottle. Today she had only about 2 inches gone. Is this because the celery has water in it and therefore she doesn’t need as much? is this normal? she is still peeing and pooping just fine. I gave her some more celery when I got home today to make sure she was eating and she ate it all up. Any suggestions?

Also, does it matter if I give her the recommended amount all at one time or sporadically through the day or should I be consistent every single day. Because I like to give her some when I put her in her cage and get her out. Is this ok?

        THANKS

Since celery is mostly water, I’ll bet your bun was not as thirsty because of eating it.  One thing to watch with celery though: the long strings in the stems can get stuck in a buns teeth and can cause intestinal troubles.  It is fine to feed celery, just be sure to cut the stems up into 1 inch chunks before offering it to your bunny.

             Hi Daisy,

I feed my buns twice a day, I just split the recommended amount in half.  Cinnamon gets a treat when he gets his shot which is a papaya treat or small piece of fruit (he has lost weight since he has been sick and it’s been hard to get him to gain it back, so he can use the treats).

Oh and great to know about the celery, I had no idea that it could cause problems!  I learn so much here.

You can definitely give your bunny her veg sporadically throughout the day. I like to cut the veg into smaller pieces and use it as “treats” instead of sugary treats to reward the buns for being good. My bun’s have parsley, cilantro, and romaine regularly, and then each bun has their favorite treat. Juli’s favorite treat is blueberries, Kramer’s favorite treat is mint, Raymond’s favorite treat is carrots, and Grace’s favorite treat are these god awful Kaytee honey/peanut/dried fruit/seed cakes that her previous owner was feeding her and I’m only giving her teeeeny bits right now because she is still developing her interest in veg and other healthy treats (I don’t recommend those Kaytee cakes for people – I just give them to Grace right now as a reward for taking her Baytril! It seems to be the only thing I can get her to like, and I plan on stopping those cold turkey once she’s done with her meds so she’ll develop a taste for healthier treats. They pack on the weight too – now that Grace only gets a teeny piece of them from time to time, she’s shedding a lot of her excess weight!)
