Water and Plums

I was wondering, is it alright to give my bunny water from the tap? (Not directly, we put it in a bowl.) A friend of mine says her bunny died because she gave him that water, but when I asked what she fed him she said “carrots and lettuce”. So, it might not be directly related to the water. I’m mostly concerned because the water here is a bit rich in… limestone? I think that’s what it’s called. That white stone that sometimes gets in washing machines. I put a bowl of water to evaporate and didn’t see any residue, so I don’t think it’s that much. Both my family and my animals (dog and parakeet) drink from it with no problems, but I’m concerned about Alex since his system is more fragile. What do you think?

Also, I found dried plum while scouring the storage room for raisins (found none. ). I read in a blog plums are safe for rabbits. But these are dried and have added conservatives. Do you think they’re safe for Alex?

I always give my rabbits tap water and have never had a problem because of it or at least cause to think one of my rabbits has passed away from tap water. I just clean my bowls twice a day, dump out the old and put in fresh. I think if it’s fine for you and your other animals, it’s no problem for your bunny.

Plums are fine – usually dried fruit is higher in sugar than fresh so keep that in mind and only give in small amounts as it would be considered a treat.

it all depends personally because we live in AZ and there is so many minerals in the water here and no one really wants to drink it unless they have to, we drink bottled water, us and the animals. But if you and your other animals are drinking it then it is probably okay for your rabbit.

If you are unsure about your water in general, and it varies due to locations, then you can get a Brita filter for either the faucet or the pitcher that goes in the fridge. I use one for myself, and it didn’t cost much, holds a lot but is skinny and not too heavy. I don’t use it for bunny, but would if I was concerned. It’s a nice option.

Do you pay for water in your country? I know that in Canada, there is no water bill, but I’m not sure about where you live (In Portugal, right?). If you do pay for your water, you may want to call the company and ask about the water.

My bunny gets a tap, or sometimes water from the brita pitcher in the refrigerator.

Yes, we do pay for our water. I don’t think it’s a problem on our house alone though, it is in all the towns that have this company. I probably will keep giving him this water. Or I can ask a friend of mine who lives nearby, she had a lot of bunnies. (why didn’t I think of that earlier…)

I know that in Canada, there is no water bill

We actually do pay for our water. We have a water and sewer bill that we have to pay every 3 months.
