Alright, so, today I noticed Smokey felt very cold, including her ears. I wrapped her in a blanket and snuggled her for a bit, which she thoroughly enjoyed, but it got me to wondering if the fleece bed she has in enough. Our current place of living is in a basement. It is carpeted, but we have the heating vents closed because SOMEONE here refuses to go outside to do their chain-smoking, and I am asthmatic to cigarette smoke. I also dislike having all of my belongings smell like smoke. Plus, I don’t want any effects of it getting to Smokey.

So around the time the sun goes down, it tends to be very chilly down here. I’ve bought her the Drs. Foster & Smith hay house, but she’s almost completely destroyed it. She has a little fleece bed she lays in (pictures in my sig), but I just feel like it’s not enough.

Does anyone here have a hooded bed for their buns? I’ve seen a couple online that resemble tunnels, but I don’t think Smokey would sleep in something like that. She uses tunnels to run through. I’ve seen beds that look like little houses, but they only have them in Australia and the UK ;(

Also, I wouldn’t be opposed to making my own bed (with 100% cotton fleece, of course) since I know how to sew/crochet, etc. But I just need to know what to do, if any of you have done it.

        : )

If the temperature isn’t below 60 degrees, then Smokey should be fine.

Lolli never laid in a bed like that, but she does like to lay under blankets. I found this out when I draped a fleece blanket over her box. It creates a burrow-like space for her. Normally she just lays on the floor with it draped over her, but I have noticed lately she will lay on the blanket, kind of wrapping it around her. And I’m such a bunny slave – Lolli’s currently snuggled in under my comforter that is hanging off my bed. I don’t have the heart to move it. LOL

So before you buy anything else, maybe try draping a blanket over something and see how she likes it. Lolli LOVED the blanket over her box. Didn’t hardly come out for like 2 days after. lol They don’t need to be wrapped up or kept super warm, so just draping it over a box or cage would be good enough to keep drafts off her.

It gets about 70F down here, perhaps a little cooler. The blanket idea sounds good, but Smokey hates blankets. I used to put one in her little hut and she would always pull it out every time… then poo on it. Brat! But if she’s alright, then I won’t worry too much about it. I guess I worry too much ;(

I drive myself nuts worrying about Lolli. And yes, 70 degrees is perfect!

Lolli used to pee all over any blankets or scrap pieces of fabric that I gave her. So I was hesitant to give her a fleece blanket. For reasons only she knows, she hasn’t peed on it yet. lol Just lays on it so she wraps herself up a little. Same way with my comforter. Maybe it’s cause both are mostly off the floor. Who knows……

Yeah Smokey has always peed/pooped on blankets I gave her. I got her a fleece cat bed and she lays in it all of the time. Sometimes she grooms it, which it odd. Sometimes they have the oddest way of determining if something needs saturating with pee or if it’s approved to lay in haha

                  The cold ears are normal

Chacha is down in the living room and it tends to get cooler down there, about 60-70 degrees at night.

I don’t remember where I got this bed. I got it online. If I remember where, I’ll post the link or send you a PM

She doesn’t sleep in it. She likes to paw at it

I bought my little bunny a cat tent …. it is like a hooded bed.   It is a little big for my little Holland Dwarf …. but we put little blankets and a stuff animal in there and she snuggles up around these things if she is chilly.       So look in the cat bed department and you will find many cute little cat tents or dome cat beds.    They are also making dog beds like this now too. …. so one for a small dog may work well also.

70F is plenty warm! Our house is set to 55F at night and they do just fine.

Bunnies use their ears to control temp, so warm ears mean the bunny is trying to let off some heat. Cold ears mean that they don’t need to let off heat and are trying to keep it in. Cold ears doesn’t mean the bunny is cold – mine always have cold ears after sleeping, but they warm up as soon as the bunnies move around and start generating excess body heat.

It’s kind of like how your hands or feet can feel cold, but it doesn’t mean your body is cold – just that it’s cool out and your body is conserving energy. Nothing to worry about.
