My vet can’t see him for a week unless it becomes an emergency.

I was grooming the buns yesterday and noticed Walter looked like he was squinting in his left eye. I picked him up flipped him on his back and looked closely at it and it appeared as though the 3rd eyelid was swollen. And the eye itself is very red and irritated. He didn’t seem to be bothered by it. I called the vet and was told to rinse it with cool water in case something was in it. So I did and he seemed to open it a bit more.

This morning I get up and check him it was matted shut completely with whitish puss coming out. The eye is extremely red now you his normally blue eyes look purple. There is a opaque film on it and on the pupil there is a white spot. I rinsed his eye again the white spot washed away but his eyelid is very swollen and even though it doesn’t seem to be bothered by it he definitely does not like me touching it.

I am not sure if he scratched it somehow or something got into it. I checked his teeth the best I could and didn’t see anything wrong with them. Or if he has an eye infection.

Poor little dude. I called the vet back but he wasn’t available and the tech told me to buy some kind of OTC drops (can’t remember the name at the moment) which I am not comfortable doing without the vet seeing him.

Can you drop him off for the vet to see? Many times my vet takes drop offs and looks at them in between surgeries and other appointments. I would ask if you can do that so he can fit him in to look at him.

Eyes are serious business, if your regular Vet can’t see him, i would get him to anyone at this point. I’ve had issues with a cat and a scratched eye and even dealt with a rabbit who’s eye was not treated from a scratch and had to be removed due to infection, it was so bad he didn’t make it. Hence I feel very strongy that eyes are such sensitive areas of the body and should not be treated lightly.
As Sarita suggested can you do a drop off? I do them all the time, since i work all day (can’t pay the Vet bill if i don’t go to work lol).

Good Luck, hopefully it can be treated and clear up quickly with no fuss.

Walter is doing ok he has his eye open all the way now and it is no longer swollen. It is still very red and looks like there is a scratch on the pupil. My vet wouldn’t do the drop off thing since there was no room (hoarding situation lots of animals were there). But they gave me a number to a vet a couple of towns over who I have an appt. at 5 this evening to take him in.

And a good thing about it this whole situation is this vet charges $0 for the first visit and any medications needed. His motto “It’s about the animal not how fat my wallet is.”

Glad to hear someone is able to see him.
If it’s a scratch on the eye, they will most likely give this gooey eye gel to put in it a couple times a day. It’s pretty easy to do. Just keep on keeping it clean, sounds like if the eye is open and less swollen you’ve been doing a greta job treating it.
My Kitty had a scratch on her eye it healed with the meds but she always had a scar. Though it was no bother to her didn’t affect her eye sight.

Yeah one of my dogs got a scratch on his eye when he was a pup and I had to use this really gooey stuff.

My vet told me until I can either get to them or to another vet to keep rinsing the eye with saline, putting a warm cloth on it and wiping any goo that I see off.

                          Back from the vet.

He gave Walter a huge rubbermaid tub of cold compress packs and Saline.

Walter has a scratch on his pupil which is the white spot I keep seeing.

It was all caused by a tiny piece of hay that was lodged under his upper eyelid. So he removed that and flushed the eye out.

I have to flush his eye with Saline twice a day and put this gooey ointment (can’t remember the name of it) twice a day and hold a cold compress on his eye for 20 minutes twice a day. And he is on a round of Baytril as a precaution.

Walter loved it afterwards because he got a huge bowl of vegetables at the vet lol I had to pull him away or he would have never stopped eating and we would have never got home LOL! But he let the vet and tech know he was not happy about the ointment and flushing they did or the plucking out of the hay.

Glad to hears he’s feeling well … lol Does the Vet Vech have a war wound?
Ouch hay stuck under the eyelid! Sounds painful, and surprising we don’t all have incidents like that. You’d think it would be more common, not sure how it could be easily preventable either.

                            Speedy recovery Walter!

Glad to hear the offending hay piece is out and Walter was eating his veggies and his eye is getting better. What a nice vet! So glad it wasn’t caused by a dental problem. Healing vibes for Walter!

Jerseygirl, may I apologize here that I didn’t get back to you on another thread. It was the laxatone thing and its possible interference iwth the bunny being sufficiently hydrated. I appreciate your responding to me but didn’t get around to letting you know. Hope the NIC thing is working out for you and your buns. Did you post pictures somewhere yet that I missed? Thanks.

No worries lashkay. & no I haven’t posted pics of NIC condos…I don’t plan to build any in the near future. I just stocked up on them for future needs. I’m not prepared for the future in multiple ways but I’ll be able to whip up a bunny condo if need be. lol

Sonn, how is Walter’s eye? With that nasty bit of hay gone from under the lid, his eye must be just about all healed now…Healthy vibes to Walter

Walter’s eye is doing great! No more swelling and just a tiny bit of redness that is barely noticeable unless you are looking really close.

Glad to hear that you were able to get Walter into a vet somewhere and get him treated- from the sounds of it- the sooner he was seen the better for his eye.

Even if a pet scratches the eye and you go thru the healing process and they have s small speck or scar that you can see- it really should not bother them much- they will adapt.  They don’t need to read or drive- so a small scar on the cornea is not a big deal.  Sounds weird- but it really is true that they can adapt well to those typeof injuries and heaiing.

That’s great that your vet was able to take out the sliver. I know how painful it can be when I get an eyelash stuck under my lid. I winced just from reading about it. Walter is a lucky bunny to have you to take care of him and look after him. A little redness after that ordeal, sounds just normal. I always flinch a little bit when I watch Dustor go after his hay and it’s sticking out all over. I’m just afraid the little bugger is going to get his eye scratched. I just pray he closes his eyes when he’s in there.

You can’t really see the redness now even when looking close unless you are near a bright bright light. The vet wants him to finish off the Baytril for the whole 10 days just in case. And that Walter is definitely not a fan of I have to wear gloves to give it to him LOL he is super fast with the teeth and claws.

Yeah I always freak out when Pacey gets inside the hay box to eat and I see all those pieces sticking out. But mainly he comes out with a mane of hay instead of hair. Walter won’t stick his head into the box if it isn’t laying flat he won’t eat it. And yet he is the one that gets the hay in his eye!!!
