Volunteering in shelters

After recently becoming a bunny owner I am completely in love. But this has also brought to my attention how many rabbits get bought as pets and people just get bored of them which is making me really sad. I look online for things for my rabbits and all I ever see is people selling their unwanted rabbits and most of these are not even 6 months. There’s also so many rabbits for adoption in the pet shops I go to. I bought my rabbits and never even thought to adopt and although I love my rabbits I can’t help feeling a little guilty for not looking into adoption. I feel so tempted to just go and adopt another pair but I know that you can’t rescue them all and I would probably be taking on more than I could handle, as nice as it would be I know it’s not really fair. But I have been looking at rescues in my area to see if I could volunteer as a way of doing something for these poor animals.

Is this something any of you guys have thought about doing or already do? Or is this also taking on too much when I could be at home with my own rabbits, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

After getting my buns, I started volunteering at my local shelter. There wasn’t much they did for buns, though:/ all I could do for them was donate items and bring the bunnies treats. The shelter’s small animal room was literally a walk-in closet and I couldn’t get them out since there was nowhere to bring them to for exercise.
That didn’t take up too much of my time, and still gave me lots of time with my own bunnies!
I actually ended up starting my own rabbit rescue in order to give homeless bunnies in my local area a better life in between finding homes, as the shelter’s walk-in closet was the only rabbit rescue in the area. I have found this takes up MUCH more of my time, and my rabbits are pretty unhappy about not being able to spend time with me while I’m doing other things for the rescue. I don’t even get to spend a lot of this time with the rescue rabbits, most of it is legal stuff and keeping up the website and different social medias.

I say bring your local homeless buns treats and just sit with them for as long as you can!

I wish there was something that we could do! It seems like no shelter for cats, dogs or even exotic pets have the funds to stay in business too long without the help of funding or donations. Maybe one of us could hit the lottery, the buy all the shelters and make them no kill? Just thinking out loud.

Volunteering for a local rescue or shelter is a great way to help out. I have looked into it myself, but one of the main ones local to me is so structured with time frames that you have to be able to meet for volunteering, that I simply couldn’t make it because of my work schedule. If they were more flexible I would love to volunteer.

I have also looked into fostering, but we’re not sure on that yet.

Shelters and rescues are usually always in need of volunteers. If you did volunteer at a shelter/humane society, where the focus is on dogs and cats, and the personnel may not know much about rabbit care, it might be a good idea to make printouts on some various topics of rabbit care – feeding, including the right veggies to give, the right kind of litter to use, good toys for rabbits, area rabbit savvy vet lists, etc. and see if the shelter would want to hand those out to people who do adopt rabbits.
