Today was the big day! The visit to the bunny rescue!
I had initially emailed them when I first brought the bunny boys home asking for advice on what to feed such young guys and how to keep them healthy and happy since they were ripped away from the mom so soon. We emailed back and forth a few times and the last time I was invited to visit the shelter.
I took the boys, of course, and the first thing I heard was “::GASP:: They’re so tiny…poor poor babies!” Once they got over that they went on and on about how adorable my boys are.
I was referred to a vet they’ve been dealing with for over 10 years. They do speuters for a very reasonable price and they don’t believe in “padding” the vet bills. I was happy to hear that! It sounds like I can get both boys done for the cost of one at the vets I called. And that’s regular price, not rescue price.
Anyway, we chatted a bit and I looked around at bunnies, and there was this one really big black bunny, I didn’t catch her name, but she was adorable! And she liked to be held. A volunteer was carrying her around and I wanted to hold her so bad! But I didn’t ask because the founder was talking to me about nutrition and where her food and hay come from. She also had a large stock of willow toys for sale. I’ll definitely be going back for my food and hay…and probably some willow here and there.
When she was done with her spiel she said “So! What do you want to pick my brain about?” I had to be honest and say “Well, I’ve read a ton and joined a rabbit forum where I’m learning a lot so really I just came to see the rabbits.” She thought that was funny and told me to look around. But there was cleaning going on and I didn’t want to be in the way so I didn’t get to see as many as I’d hoped.
We got to talking about a lot of personal things as well. She was a very nice lady and I seemed to click with her right away. We talked about my rescue experience with dogs and ferrets and she said that if I ever wanted to help with the rabbits I was more than welcome to join them. Since I want to learn more I’ll probably take her up on that offer.
I’m glad I went. I saw how sturdy the NIC cages can be, they had rows of rabbits all housed in them. If I can find the grids I’ll probably build my cage instead of buying one. It seems like you can reinforce them even more if you put wooden dowels where the sides connect. I saw a design there that I really liked and I’ll try to recreate that. :0)
I seem to be obsessed with rabbits!
