I want to firstly say i have no clue about rabbit genetics etc so please excuse me if this is a stupid question, but i always presumed my bun was a dutch cross or something along those lines as he has dutch markings but a white patch on the coloured bit and two coloured bits on the white section, he has one eye half blue and half brown, the other is mostly brown with a small bit of blue at the bottom, i was doing some googling at 1 am and found that if a rabbit carries the vienna gene it can come out as dutch markings, but the rabbit is not a dutch at all (i think!) is there any way to tell what one he is, a dutch or vienna carrier? (he was an unwanted rabbit so i have no info on his parents etc) i dont plan to breed or anything but i just think it would be interesting to know what he is! Hopefully that made sense, if anyone could explain to me what the difference is and if i could find out what one he is then that would be appreciated!
(Pictures for reference if they might help, i tried to choose ones from all angles of him i could get! http://imgur.com/a/AvU5GPL )

He definitely has the face, and abdomen markings of a Dutch but he is a mix of Dutch and some other breeds as there is a white spot within the abdomen coloring. I’m not sure about what the Vienna gene is but hopefully someone else can chime in!

The Vienna gene gives bunnies blue eyes and white coats if they don’t normally have one.

An expressed Vienna gene may give a rabbit Dutch-like markings. A double Vienna gene will make a BEW, and any offspring of a BEW will be either BEW ( if both parents were also BEW) , have Dutch markings, or be a carrier and not express the gene at all. If your bunny weighs around 5 lb, he is probably part Dutch (standard weight of a Dutch is 5.5 lb). Another hallmark of a Dutch is a compact body shape.

I looked at your pictures. Your bunny could be a Dutch mix… but I’m leaning toward Vienna marked. Heterochromia of the iris can occur in both Dutch and Vienna marked rabbits. However, the two genes are completely unrelated. Vienna markings can vary from a little snip on the nose or toe to mostly white on the front half of the body (and anything in between). Dutch markings are pretty distinct (blaze, saddle, etc), but they can vary and individuals can have less than ideal markings. The reason I’m leaning toward Vienna marked is because the markings are asymmetrical. Vienna markings are often (not always) asymmetrical. That is my guess, but I could be wrong. LOL
