I just got home from a few hours out and noticed right away that Calypso was not feeling well. He’s huddled in a corner and will not come for veggies or even pellets! I even held a pellet in front of his mouth and he turned his face away!! Plus, there aren’t really any poops in the litter box. (Which makes me worry about Echo, too, since I changed the little box around mid-afternoon. I came home at 9:30 pm. But she’s at least eating and acting normal.) Poor little munchkin! I called the emergency vet who said that if he hasn’t pooped by morning he’ll have to come in for an exam.

Anybody know what could be wrong? The vet suggested a possible blockage or a bladder infection (Calypso’s tail had pee on it, as though he had been incontinent). Please send any get better vibes to my sweet little man! And if anybody has ideas about what I could do, please let me know!

Oh Lara! I was in exactly this situation just days ago so I know to well the worry you feel. Jersey also had pee on tail and no appetite. I couldn’t really determine whether it was gas, a bladder problem or something else. I gave her simethicone over a few hours and eventually she improved so we didn’t need to go to vet.  I can’t say for sure if it was gas for Jersey or whether that was a secondary problem. But as you can’t overdose on simethicone I thought it ok to give.  So if you have some, it wouldn’t hurt to try that if he’s acting like he has gas.

Does his tummy feel bloated and/or doughy? Sometimes Eddie gets gas and this is how his tummy feels. I give him some of the simethicone (baby gas x) and massage him all over for a bit and he’s been fine.

I massage him all over while concentrating on his tummy. I figure a whole body massage probably feels good. lol

I don’t have any of that, unfortunately! However, I just checked on my baby and cuddled with him on the floor for a bit. When he got up, there was a bit of diarrhea on the floor (mushy but not liquid, and definitely not cecals) and a puddle of pee. My poor little guy! Anyway, I can’t even take him to the vet myself tomorrow as I have to work a 12 hour shift. A friend of mine said that she can take him for me, so he’ll definitely get in, but I wish I could be there. I’m so worried!

The vet suggested a syringe feeding Calypso a bit of pineappple juice because he’ll need calories and apparently pineapple juice helps to break up some blockages. Has anybody heard of that before? (The emergency vet is not usually a rabbit doctor, to the best of my knowledge.)

I’ve heard of it but it’s a bit old school IMO. I would hesitate to introduce sugar into the gut when like this. If you do want to give it, dilute it some. I think water would do a good job hydrating a mass. Though if he’s got some mushy poop perhaps he doesn’t need hydrating.

I recommend reading part of this article relating to adult rabbits if you haven’t before.  It’s towards the end.  http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/poop.html

Well…he doesn’t have a gassy tummy. I’m not sure on the pineapple juice. But you could try mushing up some pellets and force feeding those to him just to make sure his gut keeps moving. While it doesn’t sound like he has GI stasis, this article might give you some ideas on helping him or at least getting food into him. It’s by the same place as Jersey’s article as well.

I think you need the vet to do a physical examination. The pineapple is very old school as Jersey said. At this point you have no idea if he has a mass or not.

Thanks for the vibes everybody; I think they worked! I spent some time giving Calypso a nice long tummy massage last night, which he clearly enjoyed. I kept checking on him and this morning he was eating and pooping and has been fine and his happy bunny self all day! Yay! I’m not sure what was wrong with him, but I’m glad it’s gone. If that ever happens again,we are heading STRAIGHT to the vet… last night was way too scary, seeing him like that.

Thank you for the advice. I’m going to go pick up some of that simethicone to have on hand just in case I ever need it.
