Vet trip tomorrow – non neutered siblings

Ariel and Miranda (5 month old siblings) are off to the vets tomorrow for a general check-up prior to thier spays (hopefully!). We have had to separate them due to them having a fight, but we were going to take them to the vets in the same carrier. Is this a recipe for disaster, or still the correct thing to do?

My gut feel is it will be fine, and the bunnies will comfort each other (referring to the “car ride” method of bunny bonding)…

I would separate them- they are no longer bonded- and could fight in the carrier again.  Even when using the car ride as a bonding technique- you have to be ready to act to separate them or distract them if needed.  They are already heading to a “big day” for spay and time at the vet clinic- separate them and keep them separated until they are well healed and then begin bonding again.

EDIT:  I just re-read and saw that this was a pre-spay appt- I would still separate them- the hormones are still present and you do not want any fighting to cause a negative association between the bunnies.  I would still wait until post-spay to do any bonding.

I’d be tempted, but I think Katnip is right and makes good points. I’d hate to have you get to the vets with a new need to see her due to a fiight on the way there. It’s probably a good idea to own one carrier for each bunny anyway.

Good news everyone!  they had their checkup at the vet and were both given a completely clean bill of health. They also confirmed they are both female and neither one is preggers, so that’s a huge relief. They’re so little though, Ariel weighs 1.05 kg and Miranda 0.990kg (just over 2 pounds each in imperial money).

We managed to get their spays booked in for this Tuesday, which is geat and also means we can start the re-bonding process on January rthe 1st. It’ll be their new-year’s resolution. “I must get on with my sis”!

Ahoy hoy!

I have updated somewhere else (Diet and care IIRC) but that was mainly to ask silly questions about post spay care. It’s a worrying time, but as usual these bunnies just seem to exceed all expectations.

Their spays went as well as they could, thanks; they have glued the external incision and sutured the internal with dissolving stitches.It’s all nice and neat and 4 days on the rabbits are pretty much back to their normal crazy selves, and eating…well, like hungry lions i guess (except hay and pellets, not gazelles). I am wondering how long it takes for the fur to grow back on their bellies as they must have cold tums! Not to mention they look a bit silly!  (sorry girls!). They do like to “foot flick” at us occasionally so I think they’re still a bit PO’d with us for making them have major surgery…

 

Also, bit of a tangent here, but really like your avatar. Is it  a real picture, with the rainbow and all? It’s a great pic and the bunny looks super.

Yes, generally, we DO NOT recommend that bunnies post-spay are allowed to hunt gazelles. It is definitely too much activity so soon after surgery. Please wait until the second week… (LMAO!)

That’s great that they are back to normal. With my girl, it took a few days for her to seem normal… but then after that… whew. She was ticked.

Thanks for your comment on my pic! That is Meadow and she’s standing by our front door that has the (I guess?) cut glass that fits together to make a design. When the light reflects on it, it makes a rainbow. It really was just luck that I was able to get that pic!

That is my favorite pix of Meadow, and one of my all time favorite pix of any BB bunny.

Glad to hear the girls are doing well. You could get a fleece cloth or a soft cat bed with low pile (doesn’t taste as good as a gazelle, but the girls will try it anyway) that they can snuggle in while their fur grows back, just for warmth.

(Chuck just throws himself across Noot’s back, which is another way they can warm each other.)

Monkey’s tummy is still partially bald, it makes me giggle every time she goes up on her hind legs to show it to me. She snuggles with her bear, or in her fleece bed, hopefully within the next bit I’ll have a friend for her to snuggle with
