my mom was reading the news paper and saw a savy vet opening in my home town! so i did book an appointment there. it was sappose to be tomorrow, but got moved to wednesday beacuse since its new, they wernt done building in time. im taking her in for her eyes, runny nose, and to check up on if there is anything else we can get for her abbces. I will update and tell you guys what is happening with babs.
sorry i keep writing these forums about going to the vet and i never do, but this time its for sure. its booked and everything.
Thats great
Make sure to keep a list of everything you need to ask for so that you can write down the vets responses to everything since you are going in for multiple problems. Also, don’t forget to ask the vet a few questions about how often they’ve treated rabbits, how many they have treated etc.
I’m glad to hear she’s getting to see the vet now.
That’s great – do keep us updated.
glad your taking her the vet, keep us posted!
i do have a list going of whaat i would like him to see. i just found out she has bad dandrift, so hes gonna look at that, and she has a patch of VERY short brown fur in her white fur so im gonna see what that is (most of the dandrift surrounds the brown patch) thank goodness im going
AHH change of plans guys. it got moved to THURS cuz an expecter has to go through the vet to make sure its good enough to take care of animals. NO im not making this up. and yes it does seem weird how its been moving each day, BUT no im not lying. i can give u guys the voice mails to listen to if ya’ll want ^.^
sorry bout this.
OKAY i got back from the vet. so here is the scoop.
in many rabbits, more than non, there is a common problem with their respritory system like a virus, that can start from birth. babs and penny got it from their mom. it is never going to leave babs system. the abcese was cause from this virus, and when it formed, she got very stressed causing her virus to flair up. so while we are waiting for the abces to heal, she is going to have a runny nose, goopy eye, and sneezing. i just have to watch over her as it heals. they did say i could take medicine home for her, but they didnt recommend it becuase rabbits are very sensitive and since this virus wont go away, it isnt worth giving her somthing that could stress her out more. its now just a matter of keeping her un-stressed and clean.
i will be going to the vet for regular checkups from now on seeing as how my bunny has a constant virus.
It’s true that it is possible that the abscess could be from pasturella and that you should keep her in a clean stress-free environment. That is what I imagine she or he is talking about.
I do not understand however why they would not suggest any type of antibiotics – if they are symptomatic they should be taking something.
I understand why they may not have recommended a culture due to the cost (I don’t agree with them not offering this though).
I’m glad you took her in and will continue to take her to the vet.
she didnt want to give antibiotics because she was already too stressed forming stress spots on her back, so if we got it for her, the medicine might make it worse. she said we could come back anytime for them, but wait till things calm down because rabbits are very fragile and can change suddenly to things we are giving them. so yes we can go back for them just not now.
It’s good she gave you the option to come back.
yes ^.^
Maybe someone can give additional information…..I know that this is true w/ the herpes virus, however, I don’t know if rabbits can contract the herpes virus. Whereas antiobiotics are usually prescribed for secondary infections or the potential for secondary infections rather than viral infections, I do think it’s odd that they didn’t choose antibiotics. I thought that bunny vets liked to be more safe than sorry and had a tendency to use antibiotics to avoid further immune compromise. You have one immune system and when it attacks a virus on a continual basis, it can’t fight most other infection potential as well….make sense? Sarita: Can you add some bunny perspective on what I said.
Rabbits can get a herpes virus too.
I have never heard of a vet not giving antibiotics either for a rabbit with suspected pasturella if they are symptomatic which this bunny is. Any vet I know would err on the side of caution especially when the rabbit is already compromised.
I don’t think giving medication makes it worse – perhaps their may be a little stress in administering the medication but the benefits outweigh the risks in my opinion.
hmm. well i can go back any time for them. i did think that giving medicine makes them more stressed, but i probably am wrong, she just said that shes at her highest stress point. i d k. i can DEF go get sum though.
Hmmm I’m by no means an expert…but a few things to stick out as being odd to me here.
From what you’re saying, I’m gathering that the vet was saying that her immune system became stressed when trying to deal with the abcess and caused the pasteurella (or whatever virus she said it is) to rear its ugly head. It does baffle me a little too that she doesn’t prescribe antibiotics, then, since the cause of the virus outbreak in the eyes/ nose was the immune system already trying to treat another ailment. And since her immune system was obviously already compromized simply by the task of trying to heal the abcess, I don’t see how ‘waiting’ for the immune system to pick up both jobs by itself is going to help at all. The virus caused the abcess, which caused the virus to take root in another part, which is causing her to not be able to heal either the abcess OR the runny eye/ nose. Saying that the immune system is going to deal with both at the same time…it just seems like circular reasoning to me..
The other thing that sticks out to me is that the rationalle behind not giving the bunny medicine…is because the virus won’t go away? To me, that’s kind of like saying not to have a tooth filled because the cavity will never go away. =/ You can’t treat the virus, but you can definitely treat the results of the virus -and really, that’s what matters.
Again, I’m not a vet. Nor am I a med student. I’m but a humble artist. xD But that’s my pearl o’ wisdom for you anyway.
Sarita, not to go off topic here but, can bunnies get cold sores (herpes 1) from people?
I have the H1 virus, and it tends to come out when my immune system stresses or I eat certain foods. Can I pass this to my rabbits? 0_o
Panic, I’d go ahead and use the antibiotics if I were you. She may have a little adjustment time, but I think she’ll be better for it in the long run. But if you start them, you must finish them… otherwise the current infection will become resistant.
Not to confuse things…. but antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections- if the vet felt that most of the health problems (eyes/nose running) were from a virus, then antibiotics would not help. However, if there’s a bacterial and a viral infection at the same time then the antibiotics would treat the bacterial infection of course (which I’m pretty sure are what abscesses are). Just something to keep in mind when thinking about infections (for both rabbits and people!)
MM- I’m pretty sure that viruses are species specific… therefore a virus that you have won’t infect a rabbit and vice versa. (I’m not 100% positive- I have a PhD in biological oceanography, but it’s been a while since I thought about viruses!)
I don’t believe that herpes is a zoonosis (multi-species infector)…so Bob sounds right to me. Glad my mind hasn’t been completely destroyed by my dissertation….I thought it was antibiotics for bacterial and R and R for viruses (thanks Bob you put my mind at ease). My knowledge is from the misc. anatomy & physiology classes that I had to take as a component of my Psychology studies…yeah I don’t get the point either…why study that crap!![]()
i do understand what u guys are saying. i will go back for meds, i just thought at the time what she was saying made sence. i could of also taken it in wrong. sorry bout the trouble guys
i would think that being very sick would be much more stressful. it only take a few seconds to give meds (make sure a parent HELPS you hold her!) let us know what you do.
Uh oh A PhD and a bunny lover? Look out bob, the ladies are drooling!!
Panic, my vet is cautious too about giving antibiotics and as someone who doesn’t have a vet degree it’s hard for me to feel comfortable pushing…and it must be even harder being younger and feeling like your arguing.
I’d definitely ask for the drugs though ![]()
lol… Bob is my old bunny’s name… my name is Veronica! ![]()
LOL whoops heheh ![]()
![]()
ok, the boys are drooling!! heheh
LOL THANKYOU kokaneeandkahlua. i thought it was just me for a sec. i am actualy going to go see what the vet recomends. they actualy called me to see how babs was doing, but i was on vacation v.v i will call and ask for meds then go pick em up.
I have the same runny nose problem with my new rabbit and the vet didn’t hesitate in prescribing anti biotics saying it is imprtant to treat the infection aggressively as early as possible. Barry does not like the meds directly but eats it on his own when put in grated carrot! He loves this and is in no way stressed. Just a thought,
ben
hey ben. u look new. welcome ^.^
yeah im gonna get them this week. my bunnies abces is filling up again so we are gonna go and they are gonna pop it (again) then we shall get meds.
