Of course it’s scary, but you are doing the right thing and have her best interests at heart. She’ll be through it before you know it and be a much happier, healthier little girl afterwards.

Good luck & keep us posted!

well we dropped her off, the vet said she’ll call us this afternoon to pick her up. i’ve cleaned her house and made it nice and comfy for her. the vet was really nice she answered all our questions and was very helpful.

anyway the house seems so empty without my baby here!

hey guys, we’ve been back from the vet for a few hours now. hershey is ok. she seems drowsy or in pain…she doesn’t like to move much. she walks to one spot and sits there hardly moving. when she walks it is with her back legs on tippy toes…poor thing she tried to jump on top of her hidy box but couldn’t make it but i don’t want to take it out of her cage cos it’s her little private spot.

anyway she has been eating since she’s been at the vets…she eats her hay and veges..but i’ve had to put it in front of her face because she doesn’t want to move to get to her bowl…that’s fine, i don’t mind.

the vet gave us metacam to give her for the next 3 days.

the only thing is, she hasn’t pooped or peed as yet. how long after a spay do bunnies get regular? i was thinking she may be scared to go because she has a cut down there?

the incision is surprisingly small, i was expecting a big line down her tummy or something..but it’s very small..and she has internal stitches with glue outside.

the outside of her eyes are all goopy because the vet put some type of lubricant to keep her eyes moist during surgery.

i hope she gets better soon

she sounds like she’s doing great. that’s good that she’s eating. she might not poop for a day or so. i think that was about how long it took my girl to poop, but she wasn’t eating much either. keep a close eye on her and let her rest. check the incision twice a day.

So glad to hear it went well.
                          Ditto what Beka said.
Don’t know if you’ve ever had surgery yourself, but with anesthesia it takes quite a while for humans to get their digestive systems started up again, and it can be gassy/painful, so as long as she’s eating, she’ll have poop eventually.
                          Metacam’s good stuff.

You can gently clean her face with a warm washcloth.  The eye lubricant that they usually use is an ointment that melts from the body temp of the eye and coats it to help protect it and keep it moist.  Pets can not blink while under anesthesia.

I can my bunnies face for her every day- and she seems to like and and regard it as grooming.   Usually she gets a tiny ball of eye crusty daily- so I pet pet her face and she will close her eyes so I can “clean” them.  LOL- every once in a while I will lick my finger (once) and pet her face- so that she is “groomed” by me.  She gives me bunny kisses and chin washed all the time- so I figure it is the least I could do.

I only lick my finger once though- as I think I have already unintentionally ingested enough bunny hair to knit a sweater.  Yuck.

It took a couple of days for Cottons habits to become regular again- and about 24 hours for her to poop.  She was being picky about eating right after the surgery.  Activity returned to normal soon after.  She gets in and out of her cage by a wooden box (her cage is the raised kind surrounded by NIC enclosure) and I left her box there for her to come and go out of the cage AFTER the first night.  The first night she was content to sleep it off (which is good) but when I figured she would no longer tolerate not having access to her enclosure- I allowed it rather than to stress/anger her.

hey all, just updating – hershey is pooping and peeing now, never thought i’d be happy about that! she’s moving around more as well, and definitely has not lost her appetite!

now another problem is she won’t let us touch her so we can look at the incision… my husband has felt under her tummy for heat etc but we can’t pick her up. i’m assuming that it’s probably ok if she’s acting normal now?

                              also she loves the metacam!

Hehe Kahlua gobbled up her metacam too…maybe it’s flavoured? IDK

Anyways, try looking at the incision tomorrow if she doesn’t want to cooperate. I only checked Kahlua’s once a day and I’m sure thats good enough

oh yeah, the vet told us it was honey flavoured!

another problemo – she is not drinking water! i have put a little bowl in her house with water, and she also has her drink bottle…but no water has been had from what i can see…

i have been making her veges extra wet to compensate …but still.

Since she’s taking the metacam so well, can you give her a tiny amount of water in the syringe afterwards? Wetting her veggies is good.

Syringe feeding water is super easy too, generally you can just poke it slightly in their mouth, you don’t even need to hold them, and start squirting it, they’ll generally lap it right up!

thanks guys! the syringe seemed to have worked, but she is a bit moody about it. wonder why she’s not drinking?

the wonderful thing about this all is the pooping and peeing seems to have stopped.

Sorrry naz, just to clarify – you are referring to pooping&peeing outside of litter box? Is Hershey hopping normally now?

oops..yes i meant the marking everywhere…she still goes in her cage and her litterbox.

i’ve noticed her behaviour has changed alot..she is more like she was when we first got her (back to chewing everything!)

she is hopping around normally, she jumped up on the couch a couple of times which gave me a heart attack because i thought something would happen to her stitches…but she’s ok. also this morning i noticed her drinking form her bottle again so that’s good too!
