So my bunny had to go to the vet recently for a little stasis problem!  He is home and okay now but there are really only a couple exotic vets in my area.  They are fantastic but holy cow was it expensive!  This was his first problem so I had to keep him there for two days and they charged for the appointment, the x ray, and then all the hospitalization stuff like the IV and fluids and meds including the ones I came home with to give him all totaled about 700 bucks!!  I mean, I’m glad he was treated great and they definitely know what they are talking about and got him in and on treatment immediately (and didn’t think i was nuts for freaking out!) and kept me updated constantly for two days, so is that a crazy price?  The appointment alone is 78 but I guess it’s worth it for a great vet.  Now to look into insurance… heheh.  Just wondering if that’s nuts or not, luckily my guy has never been sick until now so I had no idea!

That is pretty typical pricing for exam, x-rays and hospitalization care.  Exotics are more complicated to work with so it can often be more costly to treat them.

ok good! thanks for your input, I like to be sure about these things.  It’s good though because I did like it there a lot.

I think that is very pricey too even for a rabbit.

Was this an emergency vet? They always charge alot more.

One of my advice for vets is to get to know the vet and take your rabbit in for annual exams. I have 9 rabbits and I’ve been very lucky to find vets who will work with me as far as pricing. My current vet really wanted my business (I think she wants to work with rabbits) and she has stopped charging me for every little darn thing (of course I mentioned about some of the charges like day boarding – well when you drop them off for a procedure that requires anesthesia you have to drop them off and also, in my opinion, dropping them off gives the vet the opportunity to look at them in their time without being rushed for an appointment). I’m very happy with her so I was glad she has worked with me. She also stopped charging me for the full cost exam and just a recheck as well for my rabbits that she’s already seen previously. Of course, I do seem to come in an awful lot because I have old problem rabbits.

So establishing a relationship with your vet can be very helpfu.

Goodness a lot of $.  There is VIP pet insurance.  Not bad idea to look into you just never know when some problem with bun is going to strike.

the dog we had years ago was 600 for an emergency and she was kept overnite.  That was an emergency vet.  I assume the price for bunny is about right.  As Anna said sounds about right.

Sorry I was referring to K’s post  not yours Anna.    I get bad with remembering stuff.

So BB thinks it is high .     sounds like a lot to me but then I am not familiar with these things since mine are healthy for the most part.  Except Cottons lip.

The exam and  meds came to 72.00   42 for the appmnt.  Wouldn’t hurt to look into pet ins.  with VIP  it costs me 11.00 for each of  my buns.

yeah the appointment cost is definitely high and more than i expected.  There are really only two in the area that are great with bunnies , other than those places i wouldn’t know where to go or trust that they’d do the right thing.  peace of mind is good to have.  definitely going to look into insurance – h opefully it covers a decent amount because he’s 6 already.  this is the first time anything like this has happened for me as well so i wasn’t familiar with prices.

The VPI Insurance is only$#12 a month. I have it and think it’s worth it. The only problem is if they consider this a pre existing condition and won’t cover any more treatments for this particular problem. But if the bunny is fine and you get the insurance, it should cover anything unrelated that comes up from this point on. They’re on the web.
