        Hey guys!

I saw these rabbit pellets in a local shop and decided to pick them up since the ingredients looked non-threatening and they were only $6. I recognize one of the languages as French and have seen a youtube video from canada advertising the product. I thought I would give it a shot as treats then see if anyone could give insight into the quality of the product. Anyone tried it?

Jake and Julie are on Oxbow Garden Select and I’m probably not going to change. Their vet said their diet is perfect for right now and that theyre doing really well on the Oxbow + unlimited hay (and water obvs) + 2c salad each every day.

However, ive also seen a lot of great reviews on Sherwood. If anyone has any personal experience with their adult pellets, I would appreciate them too

            Hi!

My bun has been on Oxbow before, but I try to avoid grains and soy whenever possible, since they’re not bunny foods in nature, so our go-to pellets when we can get them is your two: VL and the Sherwood. Granted, I only feed one tablespoon of pellets per day for a 5lb bun as a morning treat…

The Sherwood is amazing. Some people are horrified because it also contains alfalfa, but the variety we buy (the Sherwood Professional, since my bun eats LOTS of hay) has been great for him. Big gorgeous poops, soft shiny coat, good weight maintenance, etc.

The VL variety we buy is also quite wonderful: it’s the one you posted, but the Sensitive version – I like the urinary tract support built into that one. But we’ve had bags of your variety before and Chewie enjoyed the food and his vets liked the ingredients and nutritional balance.

Since moving to Canada I’ve had a hard time buying VL because it’s only distributed in the province of Quebec, apparently, but I recently found a shop that’ll ship to Ontario, so I just ordered 6 bags

So… Both brands’ flagship pellets are wonderful. In which case you’ll need to decide based on ingredient variations, availability, price, and your bunny’s tastes.

One thing to consider too: VL is a Belgian product. Sherwood is American. I have NEVER had fresher pellets than Sherwood’s – bright green and smelling like a freshly mown meadow.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your experience. I felt a little in the dark because while there are a lot of reviews on Oxbow & Sherwood, I couldnt find much of anything on the VL

Since Jake and Julie will eat literally anything ????? choosing their pellets is more an issue of availability, nutrition, and price for us. The VL food was actually cheaper ounce-for-ounce compared to the Oxbow.

We switched to the Oxbow Garden Select because it didnt have soy but are oat hulls considered a grain?

Timothy Grass, Oat Grass, Orchard Grass, Oat Hulls, Canola Meal, Whole Barley, Whole Yellow Pea, Tomato Pomace (dehydrated), Calcium Sulfate, Flaxseed, Lignin Sulfonate, Salt, Canola Oil, Sodium Bentonite, Rosemary, Thyme, L-Ascorbyl-2-Monophosphate (Vitamin C), Hydrolyzed Yeast, Inulin, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Yeast Culture (dehydrated), Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Manganous Oxide, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Magnesium Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Manganese Proteinate, Pyridoxine Hydrochlorine, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Cobalt Carbonate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Iodate

The one thing I’m liking about the VL food is it’s one of the few listed in green on the rabbit food comparison. But I also really like how Sherwood seems (in pictures) suppppperrrrrr green and fresh.

Do you think the Sherwood Professional is preferable over the adult health-wise?

                You’re most welcome.

                1) Oat hulls are fine. It’s the fibrous shell, rather than the rich seed itself.

                2) The VL is better formulated than the Oxbow, in my (and our vets’) opinion. So since the price is better too, it seems like a good choice.

                3) I personally prefer the Sherwood Pro over the Adult for one main reason: my bun is on a very limited pellet diet. I give pellets as a sort of multivitamin supplement to his regular diet. So, since Pro has more concentrated nutrition, it makes sense for him to eat those. The Adult pellets are intended to be free fed to buns who are not very good hay munchers. The pellets contain much more hay, and are less nutrient dense, which provides the fiber picky buns would normally be getting from traditional hay. But both types look lusciously green and smell amazing!

I currently use a mix of Sherwood and DuMOR (we are mid-switch) and I love it. My guinea pigs have been on Sherwood for several months now and I’ve only seen positive things from both species. Sherwood seems to be really healthy despite alfalfa content and the company is so friendly. They really do care about their costumers and the pets they are feeding

Versele Laga is European and a much used brand in Europe. Oxbow and Sherwood get more mentions here because they are are both US American brands. Sherwood currently doesn’t ship to Europe at all, so I don’t know enough about their pellets to have an opinion.

I have used Versele-Laga cuni complete with my buns though, and when my bun Bam got older, he got Cuni complete sensitive for sensitive, over-weight or older bunnies. I like their pellets, they’re grain free and 20% crude fiber. 20% fiber is a minimum in rabbit pellets. It of course matters less if your bun is a good hay-eater, hay is the best and primary source of fiber.

I guess I’ll have to stick with Oxbow – Versele Laga sounds attractive, but as far as I know U.S. stores don’t sell it, not even my buns’ vet (which offers rabbit food and treats). Oxbow Essentials Adult Rabbit pellets have very high minimum/maximum fiber levels – higher, actually, than Garden Select.

Oxbow is great rabbit food and 25% fiber is better than 20%. Oxbow of course gets pricey in Europe because it’s imported. I buy Oxbow hay though. It’s not possible to get hay here that isn’t a timothy mix, and I’m really allergic to timothy.

                          Thank you all so much!

I did a little experiment today and even though Jake and Julie WILL eat anything, they both took the VL pellets from my hand first (over the oxbow garden select).

Since it now seems pretty obvious the VL is better nutritionally than the garden select and its cheaper, I think we will be calling our vet then permanently transitioning

Also, Jake and Julie are both great hay eaters so while I want to make sure their pellet meets the minimum fiber requirement, I know they are getting much fiber from their hay and greens.

I will keep my eye out for Sherwood pellets. Even though we could order the Sherwood on Amazon, I prefer being able to buy the brand of pellets we use in person. That way if we ever run out before I restock, I can just run out and buy more.

Yaaay! Bunny approved. We call the Chewie’s Cheetos, because of their shape.
