Velvet’s claw broke off.

Velvet hates his feet to be touched, but he had been playing outside and when I brought him inside his claw was dangling at a funny angle and there was a little blood around the base.  Later it just fell off and he was licking his foot a lot.  He won’t let me near his foot and I’m worried.  What should I do?  I cleaned his cage out to help prevent infection.  Does anybody know if it’s safe to put neosporin or something similar on it to prevent it from getting infected?

yeah put neosporin on it (but NOT the kind with pain relieving stuff just regular neosporin).
if its bleeding you can put some syptic powder (Quik Stop) on it. you’ll probably need to hypnotize or burrito him to do it.

This happened to Calypso a while ago, and the vet said that it’s nothing to really worry about as long as the bleeding stops and it doesn’t get infected. I would call the emergency vet just to make sure, but I don’t think it’s very serious. Keep in mind that his foot will be sore for a while.

The bleeding stopped and he seems fine now. . . I’m watching him closely though.

This happened to Mr. Bunny once, after a fall. As long as it stopped bleeding and there’s no other injury, there’s no need for a vet visit. His paw will be sensitive for a few days, but then he won’t seem to realize anything happened. Just watch for signs of infection and that it starts to heal over the next few weeks. After a month or two, the nail will start to grow back normally.

This happens to some pets. Just watch for signs of infection-and keep checking every day. Neo/polysporin is perfect to put on it. You can wrap it in guaze or vetwrap if your bun is licking it off

It a nail gets snagged and is broken or cracked- the nail needs to be removed by either you, the vet, or the bunny.

If there is any bleeding you can stop it with Styptic powder, cornstarch or flour.

Keep the cage as clean as possible when the nail is heaing.  And check the other feet to make sure those nails are not getting too long and might also possibly break or catch on something.

You can use neosporin- but only well after any bleeding has stopped.

Ok. Thanks guys. Question concerning nail clipping, how is the safest way to do this if the bun hates his feet touched? Oh, and if his bottom teeth are getting real long should I clip them too? (He isn’t much of a chewer. . . )

on the teeth: you shouldn’t need to do anything to his teeth as long as he is eating hay and other foods like that. this naturally wears down their teeth. if its bothering you, see a vet. only a vet can shave down their teeth.

see the FAQ on bunny burritos or hypnosis…. you want to make sure that he is secure because they can really hurt themselves (or you) by kicking to try and escape.

When I first got both of my bunnies I slowly got them use to being in the “nailclipping position.” About once each day I would hold them against my chest, lean back and then secure them with my legs. At first I just would stroke their heads, speak softly to them and do a little touching of their feet. After a minute or so, flip them back up, give a treat, a few more pets and then play time. After a few weeks of this every day I started increasing the time from 30 sec- 5 min. Then I started each week clipping a tiny bit of nail off. This got them use to the idea that getting their nails clipped wasnt a tramatic thing and they got lots of pets and treats. Now I clip nails the first week of every month, and also do a thorough health check then as well. Feeling all over, checking for cuts, looking in their ears, checking teeth and eyes, cleaning anal glands, etc.

With a little practice you both will be experts!!!

Don’t touch his teeth!! Have you vet look-if they are growing and not being worn down the vet will have to a trim-this cannot be done at home!!!!

The way I cut my bunnies nails is different than what most people recommend.
I keep my bunnies feet on the floor. The front are easier to get but I often have to cover the bunnies eyes to keep them calm. I just hold the front paws out and clip the nails. The back are kind of hard to get because I have to pull them out from under the bunny and often they suck them back in, I cover their whole front half in a blanket because they often try to run away if they are not covered. I do this all on my bed and put the bunnies on a stack of three pillows so they are arm level and I don’t have to bend over to clip. I do it this way because I have a paranoia about a bunny kicking while I am clipping and then they get hurt. It is kind of hard, but it makes me feel safer. There has been multiple times where I have wished I had three arms.

This happened to Sunny once, I let them get too long and she got to close to an air vent. When I picked her up it ripped out, and she was bleeding. The quick was still there, though. The best I can say is keep it clean (rinse with some warm water, if you don’t have an medications like listed above) and give him 1-2 day(s) of c

My Hunny Bunny had a claw that fell all the way out. It didn’t seem to bother her and it was not bleeding hardly at all. I don’t know how or why it happened. Why is it not good to use neosporin with the pain reliever in it and just use the regular. What does the pain relieving neosporin contain that is not good for them?
