Hi I was wondering, wich greens do you think are best for your bunnies to eat.

I was thinking about feeding Fern Collard greens but I am not sure how safe they are, do they give gas?

Which veggies do give gas and which have too much calcium ext.

Which ones are relatively cheap, Not to rip Fern off, but I am still in high school so I am not extremly rich (actually I am bankrupt because of spending all my money on Fern.)

So any suggestions besides Romane, I already know about that, I want Fern to have variety.

I would try curly or flat leaf parsley – my rabbits like those.

          Also cilantro.

Collard greens are just fine if she likes them.

Also green leaf lettuce is yummy for them too.

When I went to the vet way back when the vet told me to stay away from kale, spinach, collards and alfalfa (duh) because of the high calcium content.  Also Italian parsley has a lot of calcium.  Go to http://carrotcafe.com/f/calevel.html for a full list.

Well, your rabbit still needs calcium though just like us so you should be giving them this in small amounts. This is something I never get the same answers from vets and websites from – very frustrating.

i think you should start off with friendly things, like romaine and parsley and then move onto the more problematic foods like cauliflower, just start with tiny amounts.

I agree BUT cauliflower and anything in the broccoli family can cause major gas!  Sarita just posted an excellent article on calcium.  Everyone should read this.

Ok I guess I will start with Romane, Is it ok to start out with one leaf and move up from there?

i feed moreland a little list of things

he gets his pellets about 1/4 cup sometiemes he doesnt eat them at all

he gets a pinch of greens recently collard greens or mustard greens two times a day in the am and at night.

a few green beens 2 in the am 2 at night

a slice of apple a day

                      two baby carrots a day

a pinch of parstley or cilantro twice a day

a broccoli floret twice a day as well.

i dont know if this diet is too high in calcium?  i read the article now im a little worried that its too rich in calcium or is this sufficent?  if it is i want to keep him on the fresh veggies because he loves them but which ones can i use?  at least two cups a day

                        Check this out: http://www.barkandwag.com/Rabbits.htm

I believe green beans are bad for your rabbit, same with peas – see link above.  Also you are feeding your rabbit way too many carrots and apples.  They should be fed sparingly, no more than 3x week, and only a sliver.  They are very high in sugar. Please see Diet under Bunny Info above.

Angelina did you read the article I posted today on calcium in a rabbit’s diet – I suggest that you do because that will help answer your questions.

i did sarita is there a list of veggies that dont have alot of calcium in it? i may be retarded but what i read was that if the veggies are fresh the calcium content is low in the brocooli and the greens.  he eats the broccoli and greens as well as parstey and cilantro every day.

She said fresh have a low calcium content even for kale compared to dry so fresh it is okay.

Her take is that the calcium problem is from alfalfa pellets and not fresh greens.

For me, what I give regularly is:

                                  Kale- in small amounts
                                  Romaine-tons
                                  Parsley-tons
                                  carrots-small amounts
spring mix (arugula, baby spinach etc)-lots
                                  spinach-smaller amounts
oregano-small treat amounts (because of cost)
                                  green leaf lettuce-tons
                                  red leaf lettuce-tons

I will occasionally buy lettuce mixes for salads when on sale and all ingredients are good, to give a mix. Also occaisionally Raddichio (a little expensive but the clerk often rings it in as red cabbage so I get it cheap ), brussel sprouts, organic carrots with the tops and broccoli.

I never feed cauliflower heard it was bad for them??

KK:  That happens to me w/ radichio as well LOL!

Since the farmers market is open, I’ve been going crazy w/ herbs & various lettuce.  They’ve been experiencing the fresh veggie party—the definately know Sat is coming b/c their other veggies greatly decrease and then they get the freshest of the fresh.

You want to feed lots of green leafy (any kind of lettuce, but no iceberg) Romaine, Green & Red Leaf, Boston, Butternut

Just about any kind of herb (favs here are parsley & cilantro), dandelion greens, greens (collard, mustard, can’t remember what else)….I suggest going to the produce section and going bonkers!  That’s my favorite past time.
