So this may be a stupid question. But when I got Dora at 2 months she was already being fed veggies. Not so much hay. I now include hay in ehr diet and she gets pellets. She is now about 5 or 5.5 months and eattin veggies but I dont know if she should be eattin vegies as some sites have sai no until 7 months I think. She was already given them before I got her and I did not want to stop it as I wasnt sure at first.

You are fine giving her veggies at that age.  The foster babies that I have are now around 5 weeks old, and they are already getting romaine and parsley once a day.  Since your bunny was already being given greens before you got her, her digestive system is used to them and she should be able to digest them easily.  The problems come when a bunny is on an all pellet diet and is then given large amounts of vegetables.  Their system cannot handle it, and they get soft stools.  If you want to be super cautious, offer her a small amount of only one veggie every day for 4 or 5 days.  If there are no soft poops, try a different veggie for 4 or 5 days to get her used to them.  If you know what kind of veggies she was given before, these should be safe.

to expand on this slightly – what are the best leafy things to give your bunny? i’m wanting to expand their repertoire to make it a bit easier for me – i’ve always fed spring greens (very dark green leaf) alongside whichever herb i can get a large pack of and a little carrot / floret of broccolli and occasionally a piece of celery. they rarely get fruit but again just occasionally a small piece of apple as a treat.

unfortunately where the spring greens were very easy to get not so long ago everyone seems to have discovered them and at times i cant get them anywhere! i’ve seen that people give romaine lettuce – presumably this is ok then? i heard that lettuce was to be avoided. i know kale and spinach are to generally be avoided….

so any suggestions?! much appreciation in advance!

my two babies get…….red leaf lettuce, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, celery, cucumber, paresely, dill, cialantro, dandylion greens, green pepepers, baby bok choy……fruit once a day about a teaspoon or so or a dried cranberry or rasin or something like that. Pretty much when it comes to lettuce you stay away from the light stuff like ice berg lettuce as there is nothing in it for rabbits.

The definitive list of bunny greens from medirabbit:

                  http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Food/feeding_en.pdf

My guys get herbs from the garden (sage, oregano, basil, lemon balm), spring mix, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, kale, baby bok choy, parsley, cilantro (coriander), dandylions, celery, radishes, tree and bush branches and leaves (ash, apple and blackberry) and occasional fruit treats.

Medirabbit says pear fruit and twigs are OK.  Seeds are poisonous.  I am not sure about the leaves.

i’ll give some romaine a go – what about lambs leaf? i used to give Lollo green pepper until i discovered it made him fart! they do love a little grated beetroot now and again too, it turns their wee a bit red though!

lambs leaf….hmmmm…..I don’t even know what that is. I’ll have to net search that. It’s either called something else here, or we don’t have it, or I am a big knucklehead, and just missed it.

After a bit of research, it appears that lamb’s leaf is called Mache or Corn Salad in the US (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mache)

I can’t find any references that say it is OK for bunnies.

would it be safe to try a little lambs leaf then do you think? it is a green leaf, not watery. can we assume that if it doesnt say it’s not safe on the lists; that is… presumably lists couldnt name everything thats ok, just everything they know that isnt…?! it certainly tastes good to me so i wont be upset if i dont have to share it!

I know that when I went to the farmers market and found many asian leafy greens, but couldn’t find them on the NO NO list for bunnies, I called HRS headquarters, and they suggested I try just little amounts and see. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Well we have tried a new few things with Miffy lately. First was basil and holy COW did she hoover that stuff. So guess what I just planted in the back yard lol. And I also put in a lavender patch last week. So this week we tried some and apparently its very yummy! I was looking for mint or lemon balm to plant too but I will have to check a different nursery.

And yes….she has her own garden. We have flat leaf parsley (she doesnt like curly as much), kale, Basil, lavender and I have a little patch of clover at the side of the house that I pick from every now and again.

Lemon Balm is easy to grow and our guys love it.  Try some fresh oregano too, or maybe mint.

I had lemon balm at the old house last year. we moved before I could even dig it up to replant. I loved it in iced tea lol Mint tends to take over anywhere you plant it so I might put that one in a container on the patio or something instead.

lavender is definately a hit with the bunnies!  last spring i planted lavender, thyme, lemon balm, rosemary etc… and within a month of it going in there was nothing left! i have to be sly with the pots now although somehow they reach ones that i can hardly reach! this spring i got a pear tree and an apple tree – i potted these and have had to build mini-fortresses around their ‘trunks’ (they’re more like stalks at the minute!) otherwise they’d have been chewed in half by now!

does everyone else feel like they don’t garden for their own pleasure?!

I’m in LA right now so I don’t have a garden – but definitely have window boxes that are “bunnies only”! My little Kramer got so snobbish about his veg that he now only accepts the “room temperature” veg because he knows it is fresh My favorite things to grow in my window boxes are mint, basil, parsley and cilantro. They seem the easiest to grow – the mint DID take over one of my window boxes already…

Rucy also prefers her veggies at room temperature, but some bunnies like it this way if their teeth are sensitive and since she does have teeth issues, that could be the reason.

I’ve found a spring mix by a brand called “O Organics” that is sold in a large plastic produce basket. It is a great mix and all my leaf-eating pets (rabbit, guinea pig, and bearded dragon) love it! I believe it’s a Safeway brand product so you could find it at a place like Vons, Safeway, Tom Thumb, Randalls, etc. depending on where you live. For non-bunny needs, they also make fantastic pasta sauce. Haha

Now that summer is here…I troll the farmer’s markets for my bunnies veggies.  I’ve gotten to know most of the farmers at my site and when they bring in a new type of green, they will give me a "sample" for my bun to try.  Jessica is very spoiled w/ her super fresh green veggies from the farmer’s market.  One of the stands is organic….so she gets extra good veggies.  So help support local grown produce, and visit your nearest farmer’s market!

I’ll second that, I get stuff for my buns at the Farmer’s Market every week.  The guys at one stand that I frequent are very good about getting carrot and beet tops for me from their junk bins if I ask for them.  They also have fresh field grown organic herbs this time of year, and my guys love them.

One of the rescues I work with actually gets all of their veg left over from farmer’s market – especially things like carrot tops and lettuce, and parsley, I think probably because these things don’t last so long in the heat before they get all limp, so if anyone is looking for some good veg, try hanging out around the farmer’s market when every is packing up, at the least you’ll get a good deal!
