buttons has always been getting 1 cup of greens per day, because i know that the rule is 1 cup per 5 pounds. when we took him in for his neuter, he was weighed in at 4.2 pounds. so how much should he get? is 1 cup too much because he isnt 5 pounds? or should he get 3/4 cup? or do i just keep him at 1 cup?????

Per the House Rabbit Society it is minimum 2 cups per 6 pounds body weight and I take that to mean up to 6 pounds. So he can get more than 1 cup daily. How much pellets are you feeding him now?

And like Sarita said, that is a MINIMUM. A bun that size can get up to about 4 cups per day (as long as it’s not adversely affecting their hay intake and their stomachs can handle it.) It’s hard to accurately measure how much a bun gets so some days they may get more, some days less. And make sure he always has plenty of fresh hay, like you’ve been doing.

i think i will up him by 1/2 cup and if that doesnt lower his hay intake(becuase he will avoid eating hay at every chance he gets!) i might up it some more, to maybe 2 cups a day. right now he has a pretty good balence. he is fussy about his hay and if he gets too much of something extra good he wont eat it. i will keep a close eye oh him

I push the hay here – My Two get their huge salads at 7 am ( and the human better NOT try to sleep IN, otherwise two rabbits are on the head of said Human nosing around for Food) and another Huge Salad at 5 p.m.

Otherwise, they have unlimited Hay and will munch throughout the day. I freshen the Hay before I go to Bed.

With the Local Farm Hay I have finally found here, I notice Coco actually seems to Prefer the Hay, and spends lots of time Picking through it to find favorite bits. As she was not a hay eater at all when first rescued ( Neither was Jackson really come to think of it) I love that they choose the hay.

Now as to Weight, I guess you know your bun best. Coco is my Dutch and will walk away from food once she is full. She has never been a gobbler.

Jackson will stand guard over the salad until it is Gone. He hasn’t quite figured out that noone is going to steal his food and make a break for it. If he hears Coco eating, he will pop out of the maze, run over to her and grab whatever she has in her mouth and Run.

It takes my two about an Hour to make it through their Big Salads. Of course, they pick out their fave bits first, then work down to the “Tolerable but not favorite” greens ( Fussy buggers)

A couple times a week ( when I make the massive salads) I do an second “Roots” salad – where I wash all the roots of the the cilantro and dandelion greens and the cores of the Romaine and serve that as a Second salad. Tonight is one of those nights. Jackson just grabbed one of the dandelion roots and booked it into the maze. This way, I waste nothing and they get a different texture and (maybe) taste.

with the extra veggies, he figured he could skip the hay and wait for pellets. so i guess he will be moving back down to 1 cup again LOL.
