Do indoor rabbit need UVB Light? My vet told me to get a UVB light for the vitamin D . Need more information about this subject since my local pet stores have no clues to what I am talking about . My bunny do have a big pen and get free range of the upstairs . Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Some vets say rabbits need UVB to synthesize vitamin D so they can take up calcium. For most mammals Vitamin D regulates the uptake of calcium in the intestines. But according to Frances Harcourt Brown, author of the first edition of the Textbook of Rabbit Medicine, that’s not true for rabbits. Rabbits absorb all dietary calcium from the intestine whether there’s vitamin D present or not. The calcium that doesn’t get used by the body gets expelled via the kidneys and you often see it as a chalky residue.

One of our members, Q8 bought a UVB lamp for her bun Chewie. Some birds and many reptiles do need UVB lamps, so they’re sold where you buy itensils for birds and reptiles.

Q8’s rabbit didn’t like the UVB lamp though, and avoided it as best he could, so it wasn’t a success.

I’ve never used UVB lamps for my buns and have buns live to be pretty old. They do have a big window in their room where the sun comes in during the afternoon but I know it’s not the same behind glass as real sunlight.
