Problem: Rabbit began urinating outside of cage (where litterbox is located) when let out. Thursday she had an accident in a build-a-bear bed and Friday on a (thankfully waterproof) mat that lays under her cage. I have had her since she was a baby and she has never had an accident, cause to be concerned?

Background information: Cage was originally placed in the living room, but as of the 11th she stays in my room. She is let out of her spacious cage every day for 4-7 hours, depending on the day. Always has access to her cage and litterbox, which I keep clean. She is 4 years old.

Any advice? Thanks for the read (:

Is she spayed? if not, cellular changes to the uterus because of age may cause hormonal changes and this may show as litter habits changes.

Otherwise, it seems that you changed her territory. She’s now possibly making a new territory for herself by marking it with her pee. It could also point to a possibly health issue, some health issues cause rabbits to lose their litter habbits.

Sorry this answer is very vague, but I hope it is atleast of some help to you.

She is spayed, yes. This is helpful, thank you! I actually did not consider that she was marking territory – seems plausible.

It does seem like a new territory matter. For example, if I let Wick into the walk in closet, he’ll always be tempted to pee in there because he gets access so rarely and it’s always new to him. When rabbits mark territory, it’s to make them feel more safe by being in a place that smells more like them. Since the room is new, it makes sense.
