My rabbit who cannot be more than a few months old keeps urinating in her food bowl and on her hay. I’ve started the littertraining process — with fair success, however, she seems to be urinating in her food fairly often. Obviously she doesn’t eat it after she urinates in it and i am constantly cleaning out her bowl and replacing her food and hay. She gobbles up food I hand feed her but still urinates food i put in her cage. I’m concerned about her eating when i’m not there, is this normal behavior?

        thanks for your help!

What you might want to do is to get one of those bowls that attaches to the cage that you can attach higher up that might help prevent this. It is understandable that she may be peeing on the hay – where do you place her hay? You might want to find a hay rack to place over the litterbox instead of placing it on the ground. Rabbits like to poop and pee and eat at the same time so peeing in the hay if it’s on the floor is probably normal.

Alot of this is age related – young rabbits just don’t have the discipline and control of adult rabbits.

She’s at that lovely age that makes it difficult to littertrain, but it still is helpful to go through the process so it’ll be easier for her when she does get spayed. (if you plan on doing that) Like Sarita said, it is normal for them to poop and pee while they eat, so getting a hay rack and dish that is off the ground should help.

I actually put hay in my bunnies litter boxes to encourage them to USE the litterbox, so its very normal for them to poop and pee on their hay I guess I’ll just say ditto to BinkyBunny and Sarita and get a hay rack to hang over the litterbox on the side of the cage!
