I noticed that Mellow had a little discharge from his nose yesterday. After reading some of the older posts on this board, I called the vet and got him in today. He just started getting an upper resp. tract infection. He had no other symptoms; he didn’t sneeze, he ate, played and pooped. I wouldn’t have known that that little bit of discharge could be a problem except for what I learned here. He got a shot and 10 days of banana bread flavored Baytril. (the flavor cost more than the medication!) The vet said the prognosis is excellent as he just started getting sick. Yeah, Binky Bunny! I would have been really upset if he got worse over the weekend, during this snow storm!

Good for you for being proactive and taking Mellow in! I know that the compounding flavors cost as much as the medication – what is up with that :~)

That’s great news! Yeah, it’s always best to catch these things early and not have them get out of hand. I will keep healing vibes going that your bun is back to his healthy self soon. ((((((((((((((((((((Mellow)))))))))))))))) And some better weather vibes for you! ((((((((((((((((go away snow!)))))))))))))

How long does it take Baytril to work? He still had a snotty nose this AM. Also, I am having a terrible time getting this medicine into the bunny! I am going to have to call the vet tomorrow to ask for a couple of extra doses as we have “wasted” two of them. The “flavor” doesn’t help at all. He hates it! I got my first real “foot-flick-off” when I squirted it into his mouth this morning! Then I had to wipe his face as he still spit some out. HELP!

It can be difficult to get them to willingly take those meds. Having someone help hold him down might make it go easier, this way you can concentrate on opening his mouth. Give it a little bit at a time so he does not aspirate it into his lungs. If you insert the syringe from the side you can angle it behind his incisors and you’ll have better luck than trying to go in straight on. I give meds on a towel on the kitchen counter, so the bunny is more at eye level with me. I can flatten my body over the bunny gently, to hold them in place and with my left hand, raise the right cheek, with my right hand, administer the meds.

                Healing vibes Mellow!

Thanks! I sat on the floor and kind of held him between my legs like they show in the House Rabbit book. Some got on his cheek. Man he was so mad at me. I just hope it is working. I expected him to be better by now.

It’s early days so it might not have taken effect yet.

Sometime the bug causing the infection is not susceptible to the antibiotic. So if baytril doesn’t knock it out your vet may try something else, or do a culture to identify specifically which bug it is then give suitable antibiotic. If it’s not a bug, your vet might look at teeth issues as being cause of his goopy nose.

Thanks for the advice. I hope this clears it up as the rabbit vet is kinda far away. I cleaned his face this morning and his nose is still clean now after 3 doses of baytril. He is still eating like a little piggy, too. How do the vets know if there is a dental problem? He looked in his mouth first thing and said all was well. Would he need to do an exray?

No, he wouldn’t necessarily need to do an x-ray. The vet can tell many times by an otoscope. It certainly sounds like he knows what he is doing. It sounds like he’s starting to heal. When do you go back for a recheck?

I have to call tomorrow for a recheck. He did use the otoscope and he checked his teeth really well while he was under for his neuter two weeks ago.

Great catch!! Even flavored baytril can be yucky-but it’s better then plain And likely he’s not impressed with the syringe You might have extra doses in your bottle-just mulitiply your dose and see if the bottle had more in it. My vet usually gives me a bit extra -for spilling

Good for you for catching this early. I know you were concerned that after a couple of days that he didn’t seem to get better. Give it a few more days. Normally it takes at least a few days to start to see some improvement.

First off – yay for noticing someting was wrong and going in right away!  That should make it much easier to treat.

secondly, if he really hates the meds, maybe try mixing it with something yummy – like a tsp of applesauce or veggie baby food?  My bun is very “food-driven” and will slurp up anything as long as it’s in something yummy!

OMG, I tried everything; mashed banana, applesauce, baby food… It’s just the flavor of it is gross! (I tried it) Now I am doing the bunny body slam, (not really), and squirting it in. He still has a runny nose and he just took his fifth dose (. He is eating like a pig, pooping, peeing, and playing.

Oh well – sometimes we have to do nasty things to our “kids” because we know better.  Glad he seems to be doing better!

I give him a little piece of apple right after I give him his meds and he takes it and turns his back on me to nom it. Then he is over it. He still has a wet nose, but it is completely clear. He only has three days of meds left. I hope this does it for him. Other than the wet nose, he is acting completely normal. I read that rabbits do not get allergies, but could this be some sort of irritation?

The clear goo could be lingering irritation from the infection, but you want to make sure he stays on the whole course of antibiotics to make it less likely that it will come back.

Some buns do have allergies.  They usually sneeze with that.   Sometimes the hay dust when you get to the bottom of the bag will make them sneeze.

Thats great you got right on your furbabies health and took her in.     I have mixed baytril with pear juice  fruit cocktail juice.  They lap it up.

It isnt’ really the healthiest way to do it cuz the sugar but you can find low sugar no syrup pear juice peach juice and such from a can.  Just put like 2 tablespoons 1 more if needed to kill the bad flavor.

Never thougth of lying on top bun and slipping the meds in.  Good for someone doing this by themselves if nothing else works.

He is on day 10 of Baytril and his nose is still wet! None of the juice/babyfood things that I have tried are appealing to him. (I tasted it and it is extremely bitter) He has 10 more days to go.
