Hey guys! Sorry for the “urgency” tag, but I’m leaving in a half hour to look at X-Pens and wanted to know which size you think would be best for Edmund. The seller has 24″, 30″ and 36″ high X-Pens. I read somewhere on here that a 36″ high one is best, but is that really necessary for a Holland lop? This could just be me, but I don’t see him being able to jump that high… :/

        What are your guys’ recommendations?

I think you would be fine with the 30 as long as he’s not a jumper – most of mine are 36 except for a 24 one that I use for boarding bunnies (the pair I board are not jumpers – but I make sure that there is nothing that they can jump on and jump over.. I place it kind of in a corner for the pair….but I still think that short is kind of risky.

I use the 30″ ones. Both of my rabbits jump. They are fine with the 30″ pens. Just don’t put anything near the edge (boxes or hidey huts) because bunnies like to jump onto things to jump over things lol. My Dutch is a little escape artist! She can find her way over or out of just about anything. lol.

I’ve not had anyone jump outta the 30, thought I have a 36 as well. (I like the 30 b/c it’s easier for me to walk over, though i can both)
At our Shelter we’ve had issues with rabbits not juming but actually CLIMBING out the 36″ pens LOL, so we have to clip sheets on top. So if you have a climber it doesn’t matter the size :p

lol that is kind of funny! Mine are not climbers thank goodness! I saw a you tube video of a rabbit climbing up things like a cat. lol. My pens have the bars that are vertical so I don’t think mine could climb them.

So, I ended up buying the 24″ pen, came home, and then I saw all of your posts. Honestly, I’m looking at him right now, and I’m not the least bit worried about him being able to hop over. There’s just no way he can get over that thing (especially since there’s nothing in the pen for him to climb on top of to jump from).

The only thing I’m worried about is him knocking it over somehow. :/ Is there a way to make these pens more stable? The pen came with some cylindrical, black plastic corner clips, but, at least to my understanding, you can only use them if your pen is in a hexagonal configuration. (I have mine set up like a “rabbit run” so that it’s 3 grids long and one grid wide.)

By the way, if you guys are looking for a big, cheap rug, try Home Depot. I found a 5′ x 7′ one there today for only $19.99! Even Edmund, chewer extraordinaire, hasn’t been able to sink his teeth into it. (It’s pretty flat for a carpet.) Plus, it provides great traction (I’ve seen him do over five binkies on it thus far ) and it comes in various colors.

                    *cough*

Moose has cleared the 30″ high one before

The pens are sturdier than you think, even my Moosie hasn’t knocked it down, and trust me, he has tried.

They are very sturdy as MB says – you can tell yourself how darn heavy they are, even the 24′ one. I’ll have to check Home Depot for those carpets, the only ones I can find right now like that are at Walmart and I HATE shopping at Walmart.

I know you already got it, but my two cents: I wouldn’t buy less than a 36 inch. Just because your CURRENT rabbit is not a jumper, does not mean he won’t ever have a mate that is a jumper. Or someday after he is gone, if you get another bunny, he might be a jumper. Midwest makes a pen that has a walk-through doorway. So it doesn’t matter how tall it is, because you can just open the door and step inside.

my bunny has cleared 24 inches before and i am afraid she is going to try my 36 inch one. but you already have it and if she jumps it then put a sheet on top of it.

Precision also makes one that has a nice walk-through door.

I agree that I wouldn’t get one less than 36″ – maybe 30″ at the shortest. Some bunnies aren’t jumpers, but like Beka said, you don’t know that his mate won’t be. Otto won’t even jump over one NIC grid high, but then we got Hannah and we have to be a bit more careful. She can easily jump 24″ and probably 30″, so I’m glad our xpen is 36″.

i suppose you can’t take it back now that you have used it. but if i doesn’t work out, maybe you could connect on layer of nic cage ( with zip ties) to it so it is 12 inches higher.

I know a lady who used 1 NIC tall fence around her house and non of her rabbits even jump that, though they do jump on the furtature. She’s just taught them I guess the fence is not for jumping over. So each bunny will be different.
Suzy-Q is one I have to watch out with, she can get in and out of ANYTHING. You’d think for a fat bunny she’d be a bit limited, but no way! LOL

LOL! I had 2 NIC grids high with the connectors & zip ties, Lily had no problem clearing that & he’s so tiny! He only got out @ 5am when the alarms went off & he wanted to make sure we were awake! LOL! The rest of the time he stayed in there fine! LOL!

Yeah, Edmund’s definitely not a jumper. He hops a little, but I’ve never seen him clear even a foot before. Since I’ve already purchased the pen, I’m just going to stick with it and see how it goes. (By the way, I got it for only $15, so it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t work out. ) I’ll be sure not to put anything in there that he can climb on top of and jump out of the X-Pen from though…

As of now, there are no plans to buy/adopt another bunny. Edmund seems very happy on his own. (He’s very healthy, races around the place, does binkies and purs quite often. ) I spend time with him on the floor every day, and I plan on adding a lot more toys to his little pen so he doesn’t get bored.

I’m sure you all have different opinions on the subject, but do you think a bunny can be happy on his own or do you think he absolutely has to have a partner to be content?

i think a bunny on his own can be very happy if he has someone like you! bonding is a lot of work and some bunnys don’t end up bonding. i think one bunny is perfect! but some bunnys like other bunny’s just depends.

Plenty of buns are perfectly happy on their own, just like plenty are happier as a pair. It just depends on the bunny itself

I think a bunny with a very enthusiastic owner will do just fine! Especially those bunnies that crave human attention. Getting a second one is fun, and most people seem to get the second bunny bug at some point, but don’t rush it. Bonding is stressful and hard work! Having one was so much easier.

Andi, strangely, Hannah doesn’t jump over the 1 NIC grid high fence around our living room that keeps her from the wires – like your friend’s bunnies. She looked ready to jump them for the first few weeks, but after we told her no she began to leave them alone. She can jump onto the dining room chairs (maybe 2.5ft) so I know she can clear them, but she doesn’t bother. She’d much rather find ways to go around them 😉

However, she’s jumped out of their pen by jumping onto the pet store cage (about 2.5ft) and out, so have no doubt she’d jump a short xpen if she was in the mood.
