Just a min ago, i was combing my rabbits fur, i turn around to get some water, and hes digging into the comb, i didnt think anything happened, but he starts bleeding. It seems he may have cut one of his nails. What should I do??????

Is it just his nail bleeding? Can you tell if the quick is bleeding (the vein in the nail) or if one of the nails is ripped off?

I think there are a couple people on here, who have had bunnies rip off a nail before…They should be able to help more so but

You can stop the bleeding with some plain old corn starch, and I would just try to calm the bunny down, and make sure his cage is very very clean while he heals…

Yes, try some cornstarch if you have some if not just use the towel to try to stop the bleeding too. Are you able to tell if it is his nails?

Its definitely his nail, I think one of them has been ripped out!!! I am using a towel at the moment to dry it. Just wanted to know if it was serious or not!! Thanks

It should heal fine on it’s own but he may be in a little pain temporarily. I would just watch it and him over the next few days to make sure he’s eating okay and the nail seems to be okay.

How’s he doing now? I know (from experience) that sometimes it is hard to get a bunny’s nail to stop bleeding. Do not panic, just keep applying corn starch and pressure to get the bleeding to stop. Also, make sure to check on it periodically in case the bleeding starts again. It also may be time for your bun to get a nail trim, can you do it yourself? Or is there a rescue nearby that can help you?

yes, packing cornstarch stops the bleeding quite well if you have some.  my friends dog was so terrified during a thunderstorm that when she came home from work the dog had torn out claws digging at the door.  it’s a pretty frightening discovery i’m sure, because of how much the quicks bleed!  once the bleeding stops,  try to discourage digging on rough / bumpy surfaces for a while so that the wound isn’t re-opened.  how are you making out?

oo let us know how he is. Hopefully you’ve gotten the bleeding to stop

I’ve never heard of a buns nail ripping off! I hope he’s ok.

It’s certainly not uncommon.  I know a couple of people whose buns have caught a nail in carpet or fabric and torn it off.  It’s VERY scary as it bleeds a fair amount, but other than getting the bleeding stopped and then keeping an eye on it to make sure it stays clean and doesn’t get infected there isn’t much you can do for it.

Sorry for not replying earlier, just had a bunny holiday. Thumper is absolutely fine, in fact he was much better the day after. we’ve just come back from my grandfathers farm, it was a lot of fun for him.
