        Hi Everyone,

I just noticed Ludicrous has left diarrhea in two places- one on the floor and one in his litter box. Sorry to be gross, but it is runny enough to make a little puddle- definitely doesn’t look like cecals that I’ve seen before. I’m very scared cuz I’ve read that buns can die within 24 hrs of having diarrhea. I know not to give him anything but hay until he produces solid poops. Is there anything else I should know, and when is it time to go to the vets?

          Thank you!

Hi! You are right to be on alert if you see diarrhea – it is time to go to the vets as soon as you can get to the vet. If you can’t get to an emergency vet that can help you – you need to get to a vet right away in the morning.

Has there been anything unusual about Ludicrous’s diet? Is he eating all of his hay? Has he eaten anything that he does not usually eat? Has he been acting weird lately in any other ways?

Diarrhea can be serious, and since there is no way for us to know what the cause is or why this is happening, we can only advise the safest thing – which is vet care. I am also curious about the the answers to moobunnay’s questions.

Always seems to happen on the weekends!

Whatever the underlying cause is, right now you need to deal mainly with the symptom. Sub-Q fluids are CRUCIAL to your bunny right now!! He needs to be hydrated and nourished IMMEDIATELY.

Binkles also had true diarrhea once. I rushed her to the vet’s for sub-q fluids, and it probably saved her life. We did not know the cause, nor did we ever find out. She never had it again. (thank God) =/ Bunny digestive tracts are funny, extensive things sometimes.

Make sure that bunny continues to eat and drink. Check the ears, and if they are cold, try to give a source of supplemental warmth. Do not offer veggies unless the bunny will not eat anything else. Please see a vet ASAP!

Thank you, all of you, for your replies and well wishes- I really appreciate it. I’m still trying to distinguish whether Lude has soft, overproduced cecals or true diarrhea. It is defintely mushy (he left me a little surprise on the floor a few minutes ago- byebye new slippers) but formed enough so that I can see it in the litter box- it’s not a real liquid, if I’m explaining it well enough. But for Lude to leave anything in the middle of the floor like that- something’s not right. I don’t know…
                  Okay, to answer Moobunnay’s questions…
                  1) I wasn’t home all day, but I asked my husband and he said he has fed Ludicrous some apple and Craisins, probably more than usual. But he always spoils the buns more with fruit than I do- and Nelli is fine. His diet has been the same otherwise- Oxbow hay, Russell rabbit pellets (I know, rabbit junk food- I feel guilty but he LOVES it so!) and assorted greens. I have been feeding more green leaf lettuce than usual cyesterday cuz I ran out of everything else but parsley.
                  2) He is eating his hay. Every 10-20 minutes, he goes to his litter box, munches some hay, and lets out some mushy poop. Last one, 2 minutes ago, was looking a little more solid. Oh, I hope it’s getting better- my poor bun. He’s also eating his pellets (I maybe shouldn’t have give them to him, but I wanted him to eat).
                  3) The only thing he may have eaten, and I hope this isn’t the case, is some stuffing from the couch. He is obsessed with getting inside the couch again and spends hours every day pulling the stuffing out of the cushions. I’ve caught him several times with stuffing hanging from his mouth, but I assumed he was just pulling it from the couch, not eating it.
                  4) He looks alert and normal and was hopping around happily with Nelli a couple minutes ago.

I am gonna take Lude to the vet 1st thing tomorrow if his poops are not back to normal. Meanwhe, it was very comforting to see so many prompt replies- you guys are great !! I’ll keep you posted on how he’s doing. Thanks again!
                  -Dee

I would think couch stuffing would block him, not make him mushy.
And yeah, Craisins make my bunnies get a little loose and it doesn’t take many. Hmmm…SOMEBODY needs to learn some restraint! *looks narrowly at the hubby*
Apple is pretty juicy too, and full of sugar. A sliver once a week is more than enough.

Okay, sounds like you are on top of things. Keep us posted!

Lol- yes, SOMEBODY has been scolded severely. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson about overfeeding the buns! I feel awful not giving them their nightly greens and banana slices, but I’m not taking the chance! I’m gonna camp out on the couch and let the buns roam the house for tonight. That way Lude will hop up and cuddle with me and Ill be able to monitor him more closely. Hopefully I’ll see little pellets in the litter box by morning, otherwise off to the vet’s!

It could be the diet change or added treats. Note that bunnies can react differently to the same things. My bunny Jack seems to have a strong stomach, where Bailey (who has passed) would react to the very slightest of changes.

                        Keep us updated!

I’d bet it was the apple. =x

Could well be the treats. Eating hay is good! Please keep us updated on how your bunny is doing.

I’m glad to hear that he is eating hay – like BinkyBunny said, some of my bunnies also tolerate treats better than the others. If it were me, I would probably hold of on any treats for awhile, definitely until Ludicrous has plenty of firm poops. I think it would still be a good idea to go to the vet if you are still seeing soft poops – he might need fluids or something to re-hydrate him. How is he today?

                                    Hi Everyone,
Wow, thank you so much for al the concern and support- what nice people you all are ! I’m so new at the bun thing- it really helps me feel more secure.
Today I found normal poops on Lude’s sleeping blanket- then a nice pile in the litterbox! Yay!!! I see no more diarrhea, and he ate all the hay in the litterbox. When I let him and Nelli out, he did his usual hopping around checking out his house and is now sitting in his cage relaxing (he never gets locked up during the day, but sometimes hangs out in his cage anyway). He seems quieter than usual but my daughter saw him do some binkies earlier, so I guess he’s OK. I will keep a close eye on him anyway- I really hope his poops stay nornal instead of returning to mushy tonight when there’s no regular vet open. That would be just my luck!
Anyway, so far so good… thanks again, you guys are great!

Hi! I am so glad that he is OK! Whew. Anyhow, what if any kinds of treats have you given the fella and have you given him any new veggies in his diet? I just thought that this might help figure out what caused it and prevent it from happening again. Over-ripe banana will do this as will some veggies that just don’t sit well like broccoli, kale & cabbage. What is his normal diet like and what type of pellet feed are you giving him? Oh yes and WELCOME!
