i’ve noticed my bunny has a couple of upturned toe nails on one foot and am wondering if it’s something i should be taking her on a road trip to the nearest small animal vet for.

she has one toe on another foot that has always stuck out funny but it’s just slightly out not up. she is a young bunny, just 8 months old, mini-rex – who is very hard on her little feet. i’ve had to get her special litter and tons of blankets and mats to help protect them. her favorite thing to do is run around top speed and jump on or into things… it’s very stressful sometimes haha (she has tried jumping over a chest high pen several times now). she is still running around at full pace, doing binkies, eating and drinking normally as well. when she puts pressure on the end of her foot the nails turn up more.

sorry for my rambling, i’ve included a picture.

I’ve inserted the image for you tinydinosaur. After attaching the picture to your post, you want to wait for it to appear on your “attachments” list, then click Insert Image. It’s an unintuitive extra step that a lot of people don’t realize, so no worries!

Has there been a time when your rabbit’s nails were very long? I wonder if they are in such a high position because they grew accustomed to it after being very long? My rabbit is not much of an adventurous hopper, so I’m unsure if rigorous hopping would cause this change. On the plus side, the nails look healthy. Are there any signs of an injury that maybe was healed in an odd position?

thank you for doing that for me!

her nails got a little bit long, but no longer than the outside nail you see in the picture. she is having ongoing issues with sore hocks, but they haven’t gotten bad – i hope to keep it that way – the vet checked her feet when she got spayed and didn’t note anything, that was two months ago. it’s mostly missing fur and sometimes looks very irritated when she’s particularly hard on her feet. i don’t know if that would cause issues with her toes? the only thing i can think of is she loves jumping up on everything and often jumps into her hay trough. i leave it filled with hay so she’s jumping into a softer surface, she could have jammed her toes getting in there.

would sitting at a funny angle in a wire hay basket cause this? she always sits the same direction with that foot against the bars of the basket. she has a flat bottom for her cage area, blankets and a cardboard house – but she prefers sitting in there.

she let me touch her toes while i was petting her without hopping away and she let me wiggle them without any reaction, no flinching, no pulling away. she can also spread her toes while grooming her foot. any more thoughts?
