› Forum › RESCUE EFFORTS FOR SHELTERS › Update on SaveABunny
So I spent a couple of days this holiday season over at SaveABunny helping out around the homestead. They’re just as busy as before and are trying their best to get the rabbits into great homes. I spent my days repairing their drier, cage cleaning, light fixture installation and a plethora of other things. And it is the only time I look forward to heavy labor.
The rough numbers for 2009 is that they rescued around 340 rabbits and adopted out 190. Yes, that means that there are over 150 rabbits either there or in foster care still looking for forever homes.
Now, if I could highlight a couple of the ones that stole my heart while I was there:
Cyan
Currently, she’s in her own cage because the bullies in her group kept picking on her. You can tell that she’s upset about being all alone but we’re doing the best we can to keep her happy. She’s a lot softer looking than in this picture and figured that anyone who wanted a lovely blue eyed white girl would love to meet her.
Hawthorn
After what we thought was a successful adoption for over a year, Hawthorn has been brought back to SaveABunny. It was due to conflicts with the owner’s other pets. This big lover has been through a lot and now he’s been taken from his free ranging for a year back into a pen at the shelter. He is a great bun. Although he doesn’t like to be held or picked up, he will follow you around and take all the pets on his level that you’re willing to give him. There is another lovely, large Ruby-eyed white there called Athena and she’s INCREDIBLY cuddly. She is, however, a one rabbit home bunny. So if you’re looking for only one rabbit that will be happy being the only rabbit, she’s perfect (no pic up yet about her though).
The velveteen crew
Yup, they’re still there, still as friendly as ever and still waiting for someone to come and snatch them up. In addition, there are three new lop babies from a rescue that are waiting to grow up just a little bit more so they can be altered and set out for adoption.
Mazel (Mah-ZEL)
This is another return from a foster home. She is an older rabbit who is recovering from cancer surgery. This rabbit will be completely happy to sit on your lap and be petted all day long. It is as if she knows what we have done for her was for the best and she’s always happy to see new people. She’s had a rough life and Marcy will only let her go to a home that would really appreciate this older gal.
Sharrona
If anyone wants a spirited, fuzzy, adorable rabbit, this is one for you. She’s really only for rabbit owners who can appreciate a rabbit for herself and not for what they hope a rabbit will be. Oh, she’ll let you hold her and pet her but if she wants down and you don’t let her, she’ll give you a friendly nip to remind you that it is all about her and she MUST be obeyed. I have a soft spot for the rabbits people label as ‘aggressive’ when they’re actually just trying to teach you that you are the slave and they are the BUNNY!
*snuggle snuggle* I sooo want a blue eyed white bunbun… and a lop… and a little group of grey softies… and and…. *sigh*
You beat me to it, MB, Cyan is adorable beyond measure! Poor thing, I’d take her and Mazel if I could, I just ‘click’ with them both. One who’s been bullied, one who’s had cancer…how apropos! *shakes head*
However *clamps mouth shut* if I go on about it, Mark will offer to fly them up if I pay the plane fare. lol….
I will keep all these bunnies, and the ones who weren’t adopted, in my prayers for good forever homes. I am beginning to really miss living in the bay area at this point. ;_;
MM, if he offered to fly them if i paid the fare, id be hard put to say no… hubby would freak mind you lol. It isnt THAT far from here to California after all lol
I love Hawthorne! What a cool rabbit.
If you can clear a out of state adoption with Marcy of SaveABunny, I am more than willing to fly the rabbits with me to wherever they need to go. And if you’re on the west coast, it is possible that I wouldn’t even need to fly them as I do drive about 4 times a year up to Seattle for friends. I’d prefer flying though. Easier on the buns and me. I’ll even go one step further and pay for the vet visit and medical documentation that the airlines require for transporting pets.
Oh now you did it.
*pets M&M* Now, where can I put another bun…lol
Oh my gawd.
All I can say; Oh. My. Gawd.
I wish I wasn’t so far away from SaveABunny (Minneapolis) I was totally thinking about adopting from there until I found out how far away they are… and theres really no way in H-E-double hockey sticks my parents would pay to fly over there to adopt a bun when we have our local humane society sitting right here 20 mins away…. :'(
D’:
Sharrona
omg she is hershey but in a different breed! if i didnt live up in canada id take her.. plus wayy to much money to pay for a flight for a bunny… i havent even been on a plane myself!
They are all so adorable…I’m glad I ran out of rooms for bunnies or else I’d have a bunch more! Markbun, you are just like my hubby, he also loves the “aggressive” bunnies and has the bite scars on his hands to prove it! I really think that the more a bunny grunts and boxes him the more convinced he is that they love him, haha. It totally worked with our blind bunny Grace tho, she used to box and nip anything that was in front of her, but now she settles into a bunny pancake as soon as she hears his voice. It is quite adorable.
I’m trying to vision my mom and dad’s face when they open my door and see The velveteen crew hanging out on my bed… hehe
I know I’m late in responding, but that’s great Mark you got the dryer working! I know it gets alot of use there and without it, it would be a nightmare of pile ups.
I can see why those bunnies stole your heart! So many sweet fuzzy faces just needing loving forever homes.
Just as an update, both Cyan and Sharona have been adopted. Cyan was adopted with this handsome boy, Atom. I’ve never seen a rabbit with grey eyes before…
Oh my gosh. *bunnynaps* Grey eyes are cute!
Gorgeous!
Up and at ’em, Atom Ant! ^_^
What a cutie! I can imagine how Cyan and Sharrona got snatched up quickly too.
I just want to know how they heck they got the Velveteens to all hold still for a pic? Did they superglue them to the floor? 0_o
No news on Mazel? *sits on hands* She seems SO sweet! Is she still cancer free?
He’s handsome! I just cannot imagine why any of the velveteen crew haven’t been adopted – they are gorgeous and it sounds like they are super friendly. One of my first rescues was a gray Rex named Eddie – he was a love.
Oh my gosh, I LOVE that picture. Is the Californian the mom? How did she manage 3 black and 3 agouti babies?
Marcy is definitely a wonder woman with rabbits!
Sarita can’t count today
I need to get Marcy to take pics of my 2 lol
LOL, you are right MonkeyBun. I’ve never been good at math.
Yup, she’s the momma. Don’t ask me how – it’s all genetics.
Oh my gosh…. Squeee! I want the whole velveteen crew! they fit in nicely here with Leroy, I think! Same shade grey as his spots! Too bad I’m way to far away from CA to make that possible I hope they all find forever homes soon!
I want the velveteen crew too! my mom and i are going to adopt a bunny from the oakland animal shelter once Siggy gets better. They’re adoption fee is a lot lower than SaveABunny, though SaveABunny has cuter bunnies.
Actually, SaveABunny is helping the Oakland Animal Services overhaul their bunny room. I’ll probably be helping with the moving and the painting but they work closely with that shelter. SAB doesn’t care where buns get adopted from as long as they go to good homes. I see one there right now called “Her Majesty” in case you want to deal with the fun that is a Dutch Dwarf.
A dutch dwarf???
OMG she’s purdy.’
..lol regular sized carrot. Uh huh, sure
monkey your just jelouse mb. STOP LETTING MONKEY TYPE ON THE FORUMS :p
lol
So a happy and sad update.
First the Happy. Niblet was adopted – even with teh $400 adoption fee due to his teeth surgery, no one could resist this cute boy:
And unfortunately, mazel hopped over the rainbow bridge. She was moved downstairs due to an influx of boarders and didn’t take well to the move. Before Marcy could correct the situation, she slipped off peacefully. However, she was really loved by Marcy and her last few months were great ones.
Oh no (((binky free Mazel)))
Yea for Niblett! No one could resist that toothless little face 😉
aawww, so sorry to hear Mazel passed on, poor little one. Binky free girl.
Oh, I forgot to mention, there’s a new guy at SaveABunny that has yet to be put up on the website. His name is Hulk and he’s a big bunny. He looks a little like Tyson (see pic below) except he’s about 2 feet long while standing. He’s a sweetie who wants nothing more than to follow you around and get petted. I had to laugh because they were cleaning when I saw him and he was trying to hide from the vacuum but even the willow tunnel only hid him from the head to his chest. The rest of him was sticking out. So if you want a big, love bug (or even Tyson down here) feel free to give them a call and check them out.
Oh poor Mazel! ((((((((((sleep peacefully, little bun!))))))))))))) I really felt she was a special bun, maybe because we’d both had cancer…I wish I could’ve brought her home and kept her company.
Good news for Niblet though! ^_^ What a cutie!
So I did some transport for some rabbits at SaveABunny. They all seem to be doing well. They got a new rabbit in who is literally crazy. I was told he was a bad nipper so I just had to see him and sure enough, I have a lovely little double incision on my wrist. The funny thing is that after he bit me and I petted him some more then closed the cage door, he did a bunny flop against it. He currently has no name and isn’t on the website yet as they want to give him some time to settle down.
But the one that got to my heart that trip was Gemini
He’s been at the shelter going on 3 years now (I believe). He used to be a very energetic bunny but when I walked by his cage, he was lying on his side and his belly looked distended. I opened up the cage and he let me basically manhandle him while I checked him out – he’s fine BTW. And then he just laid there while I petted him. Marcy told me that he’s just getting depressed being in the cage for so long and really wants a forever home but she’s been very particular about who’d adopt him because he holds a special place in her heart.
I am VERY tempted to get him as a third bun but that dang Maryann…
goodness, what a beautiful bunny. I wish I were closer to you Markus so I could at least go play with him everyday.
You never know about Maryann, could be like my Pringles. I thought she was happy with Daisy, but one look at Toby and it was love at first sight. Of course, that would mean you could take Dono dating then…….
Poor Gemini – he’s so cute, I cannot understand why he doesn’t have a home. Let us know when the biter is on the website too. I guess getting a good nip in made him happy LOL.
That is one gorgeous bun! I’d been in line for him myself if I were closer.
lolz…Mr. Nippy Bun has his pound of flesh, so he’s happy. ^_^ If he’s crazy maybe his name should be March Hare? …”You’re late for TEA!” *throws cup*
Well the ‘crazy’ rabbit has a name now, Chief Crazyhorse. I went there on Sunday to read to him for a while, during which time, he ran laps in his cage, threw over his litter pan and flopped a half dozen times. Another volunteer came in to give him snuggles and after capturing him with a blanket, had him swaddled up and snoozing in her arms. We then tried an X-pen to see if he just wanted more room. He seemed to be content for a while, even let me pet him while he was about exploring but about 30 minutes into it, he began nipping me all over again, so I reswaddled him.
However, while I was holding him, I noticed that his teeth were chattering – it wasn’t a tooth purr and I don’t think it was a pain grind – it was literally like he was very cold. I tranced him to check him out and found some sort of growth on his belly – which was absent of any fur (I think he’s been licking at it and removed the hair). I haven’t been able to contact Marcy (the head of SaveABunny) about it yet. But maybe this could explain his foul mood.
I bet you are right about the growth. Poor little dude. Keep us updated on him.
Sequia posted about a rabbit Tinky that had a litter that Marcy saved. She had 12 babies! I bet she’s in foster care though – not certain what shelter she rescue her from though. If you get any updates on her, I’d love to know. It’s the urgent post in this section.
I”ll let you know if/when I see them.
BTW I just found out something about the large Morland rescue we did last year. Apparently the rabbits we rescued are all perfect for a friend for an existing rabbit. Because they were in a large herd, there were only a couple of dominate rabbits and the rest were submissive. So all the ones we have left now are looking for somebun to tell them what to do.
MarkBun, we have found the same thing with the Moreland rabbits taken in by The Rabbit Haven, these bunnies for the most part do very well in pairs and groups. My former foster bunny Elphie (now Bella) was from Moreland, and she was adopted as a friend for another rabbit. I think we have only one Moreland bunny in The Haven who is not interested in other rabbits.
Well color me a newbie. I didn’t know this but apparently a male rabbit’s scrotal sack is in FRONT of his penis. What I am seeing is some common post-op swelling but Marcy is going to take another look. This is good IMO as, not only does it mean that there’s nothing physically wrong with Chief Crazyhorse but also that his attitude might mellow a little more as the hormones decrease (I had thought he had been neutered for some time).
If it is anything else though, Marcy will let me know.
Silly Mark, aren’t you supposed to where all that stuff is, being a guy and all?
How was I suppose to know that a rabbit keeps his family jewels closer to his navel? If that was my case, I’d have a hard time finding pants that fit and forget about tightening the belt!
lolz… Erm… no comment except to say that I’m glad the Chief is okay. ^_^ Interesting factoid though.
Tell him “Hau” for me.
HA!
I had to go google that after reading Markus’s comment…lol. No wonder the first vet (non-rabbit savy) I took my boy to to see if he was mature enough to neuter asked me where the heck rabbits kept them….lol
