Update on Rye: Vet did not make diagnosis

$50 and no diagnosis for Rye (see other post).

She was in complete awe at how much bunny knowledge I had, she said she wished all her rabbit owners took as good care of theirs as I do with mine…she said it was “like talking to a colleague” hah…

Anyway, she does not believe Rye has GI stasis yet. She said I could treat him with some simethicone, and she gave me a syringe to force feed and force ‘water’ him, to keep things moving.

She said that he sounds quite depressed. And the more we talked about it (being spring and all, and she said rabbits are VERY attuned to that) the fact Rye is in an NIC divided cage with his sister (Smile is not spayed yet), she said he might have some depression because he can’t breed. She said, and we laughed, ‘He has bunny blue ball syndrome…!’

Which is discouraging…but…she recommended letting him be as active as possible and keeping him fed/watered. And using simethicone.

Rye did exhibit some discomfort when he prodded very deeply in his tummy – she said she could do x-rays but when she told me how much I choked a little bit – right now I am so cash strapped with trying to purchase this mini home.

When I brought Rye back and put him in the cage, Smile started licking him through the bars Aww…

Anyway…gonna be a tough week.

Awwww maybe he just misses cuddling with his sister? Will you be getting her spayed soon?

Definitely keep an eye on him to make sure things don’t progress to the G.I. stasis level. It’s true bunnies can get so depressed, they even die. Our rescue had a bonded pair of sisters. When one died, the other just completely shut down – stopped eating, drinking, socializing. She was gone within a month. Not that this is going to happen to you, I’m just using it as an example of how social and devoted rabbits can be.

Rye and his sister can still interact through the bars…like…but wow – your example is scary.

I brought Rye up to “force drink” him – with the syringe, and he gladly took water – so I offered him a cup of water and he drank freely. Yes!

He’s out hopping around right now; actually, he’s sitting there…he’s had a stressful day so he’s a bit shell shocked.

I mushed his pellets up with water and attempted to get a bit of food in him, but he wasn’t digging it at the moment…I don’t want to stress him more, so I’ll try again in a few hours.

But he drank…which is good…

I plan to get Smile spayed soon, yes – I plan to have everyone altered (all 5 of them) right now money is tight so it may not happen for another month or two…but …yeah, I don’t know…

Believe me, I know how frustrating this kind of thing can be. When you’re really anticipating getting some answer and being on the road to recovery only to find yourself back at the beginning.

I would say to wait on the Bush tax rebate/ economic “stimulus rebate”…but then I saw you were in Canada, so that’s obviously not an option.  That’s an excellent compliment on your bunny knowledge!  Will your vet offer you a discount if you do all the boys or all the girls at once?  I’m just wondering if they can work w/ you on that.  Best wishes on holding out.  Bunny kisses to you!

Well, the lump disappeared – I couldn’t find it and she couldn’t find it…weird. Maybe it was a poop?

So Rye has been ‘free range’ bun since 5, I can’t believe how well behaved he is being – he is drinking water from a bowl on his own accord, but not so much for food right now…he is pooping like a sonofagun, but I haven’t seen pee – though I would guess he’s pissed near Yuuki’s cage…
He has been sitting next to Jazz’s cage/lying there almost constantly.
It’s like he wants to be friends with Jazz more than with Smile.

Jazz hasn’t dropped his testicles yet…so…heh. I decided to see how the 2 interacted…I held Jazz and let Rye sniff him, and Jazz immediately snuggled under Rye’s head…Rye showed no aggression.

Then… …. *giggles and shuts up*… Rye used Jazz as … well…a “sexual” outlet… which I think was good for Rye, I think he was maybe a bit sexually frustrated. Anyway, after that experience Jazz was a little perturbed but they’ve been hanging out (Jazz in his cage) and Rye next to it.

I’m going to force feed Rye in a few minutes…that will be fun.

Awe poor little fella. Well gosh, I’m still glad that you took him in, just in case he did start the GI stasis and for that lump too. I’ve hauled Bonsai to the vet when I first got him before I learned about the same thing with him, only he just got depressed over the weather. Go figure. *rolls eyes* I liken it to seasonal affective disorder and he’ll just lay there all dejected in the liltter box or push his nose through the bars while laying down (which is not normal for him). I’ll give him some extra love and also, he will get that way if he has major fuzzy butt and needs to be groomed.

Aw, what a little sweetie Rye is. ^^ I’m sorry to hear that the diagnosis is so vague and that you have to force feed/water him. Kind of a relief though that the lump had disappeared, yes?
On another note, I am really intrigued by what your vet said about spring. This is my first with Mimzy and Pip and both my daughter and I have been wondering why they are acting so…’off’. This has got to be why, as we’ve run the gamut on any ailment we could possibly suspect and came up with nada.
Sooo…did your vet happen to say how long bunnies are this ‘twitterpated’ at this time of year? Gosh I hope it wears off soon.
Bunny blue balls…lolz. My hubby will get a kick out of that one. ^^

She said that the sunlight changes were what ‘started’ off the twitterpatted rabbit…I hadn’t really thought about rabbits sensing spring, since my guys are inside…but…she said if they detect the changes in sun, etc, they know, and they get horny and mischieveous.
I’m not sure how long it would last, but it’s also my first spring with rabbits and I have noticed they’ve been acting strangely.

This morning Rye was uninterested in food but I saw him eat 1 strand of hay by himself – hey, that’s something!
