The boys are bonded!!!! I haven’t had to seperate them at all for atleast the last few weeks and they actually do quite a bit of cuddling/grooming eachother. I have not yet let them meet Lilly, I’m thinking I will wait another week or two for that. Lilly is doing great, her wool is starting to grow back in and not in matts and I think she is happy about that. She really likes Matt and cuddles up with his feet everytime he is in her room. Henri and Lilly spend a lot of time admiring eachother through the gate but Acorn doesn’t seem much interested in her.
I’ve been volunteering at a local bird rescue and I took my camera out there and got a few pictures of one of my little buddies. He’s a Red Lored Amazon and he’s gorgeous so I thought you might enjoy seeing him.
Oh, he’s stunning! How old is he? What is his story?
I’m glad Acorn and Henri are bonded! I wonder if Henri and Lilly are admiring each other because they look so much alike.
great news! i’m glad the boys are friends! i want some more bun pics when you get a chance, esp. of Lilly!

Peppers is 8 years old, he was surrendered by a family who decided they didn’t have time for him. He was fed all seeds before coming to the shelter so we are working on getting him slimmed down. He is absolutely gorgeous though and actually a very quiet bird. He also has decided that I’m his mate which is both good and bad. Good because he likes me but bad because they think if I don’t adopt him, he will get depressed. Apparently in the year he has been there, I’m the only person that he has stepped up for and that can pet him without getting bit. . . . We think we found the house we are going to buy and it would allow us enough space to have a room for the bunnies and one for Peppers so he may be coming home with me in a few months.
I will definately get some soon. My camera wasn’t working for a while there so I don’t have any new ones from the last few weeks.
i didn’t realize you were a bird person too. very cool! what kind of diet are they supposed to have?
Lol, I’m an animal person in general. I didn’t have a whole lot of experience with birds before I started volunteering though.
The little guys like cockatiels and parakeets do need some seed in their diet. Amazons are prone to obesity though and having them on an all seed diet is very dangerous as it can cause them to end up with liver and kidney damage. They eat pellets for the most part. There are several companies that make food that is actually bad for them so they are a lot like bunnies in that you have to do your research and really know what you need. As far as fresh foods, they can have everything that the bunnies can have (and Peppers loves dandelion greens!). . . actually they can have just about any fruits or vegetables other then a few. I make some birdie bread (corn meal based flat bread) and take it out there for them sometimes too.
Cool bird!! He looks like quite the character!
There is one Cockateil and two Eclectus birds at the zoo that I see quite ofter-gorgeous but LOUD lol
Oh, that’s great and it’s nice that he’s not so loud. I have a little cockatiel and he just screeches sometimes – my rabbits are not particularly fond him either because he is so noisy.
What brand of pelleted food do they feed the birds at the bird rescue?
Firstly, glad to hear your boys are bonded– I’m going to be bonding two boys in about two weeks, so news like this makes me happy. And Peppers is lovely! He looks like a smiley bird. I hope you get to keep him!

The Cockatoos there are all REALLY loud. . . I don’t think the bunnies would like them either.
They feed them a mix of Pretty Bird and Harrisons. The ones that have health problems get all Harrisons and they would feed them all strictly Harrisons but it is too expensive for them to afford it for all of them. They all get two hot meals a day too. Usually in the morning it is sweet pototoes or other veggies and then at night she makes a sort of forumula for them.
It is possible. My boys would have been bonded sooner too if I hadn’t been too paranoid about Acorn hurting Henri. Putting them in the pen and leaving them there really seemed to help.
aw the parrot is so cute, we used to have cockatiels who were so cute, glad you found bonding easy as did i – congrats
The wonderful vet I found here is first a specialist in birds, then also cares for exotics, including bunnies of course. (I heard she bandaged a lame gecko’s leg once.) Anyway, she knows a lot about them if you want to check out her website.

She has some resources for bird info. on her site as well.
That parrot is destined for your household, I can just tell. Quite a crew you are going to have and I hope it works out well for everyone. Do keep us updated with bonding the trio!
The parrot is beautiful. I have 4 of them as well as 4 rabbits. I have a good mix of the noisy with the quiet in my house. It is sad to see a bigger bird lose ots home. they can have such a long life span .
My brother had a cockatoo when we were growing up. He was a real character. Never learnt how to fly and was very bonded to my brother. They used to go for walks along the beach together, the cockatoo sitting on his shoulder, and the seagulls used to swoop them! My brother even took him camping in a tent with him once – no cage, just sat on a makeshift perch.
He lived for 21 yrs.
I think birds are like bunnies in the way that they have a lot more personality than what most people think.
Luckily for me, his vet is the avian vet for the St. Louis zoo so I know he is in good hands. He is also a bunny specialist and it is a 24 hour center which is really nice so I now know where the bunnies will go if the need ever arises.
Actually funny you say that because I got a frantic call last night from the owner of the rescue and Peppers is now at my house. She had three birds just dumped on her in the middle of the night and didn’t have room to put their cages so I went and got him and am borrowing a cage until I get mine. The bunnies haven’t even seemed to notice him yet but the cats are another story altogether. . . .
LOL He’s already home.
You’re so lucky to be working with that vet. You’re all set.
How old does this particular bird usually live? I don’t remember which ones, but I know some live at least 20 years and some live past 60, so it’s not unusual to find a bird who outlived its human in a shelter, brought by others who didn’t take it. So sad really. You have a big heart.
Amazons can live 50-80 years so he really is just a young adult now at eight years. His previous owners actually gave him up because they had teenagers who were ignoring him and the family didn’t have time for him anymore That’s ok though because he is home now and hopefully in a few months he will have a whole room to himself (and the bunnies will too!).
Oh yeah and I don’t think I mentioned this one yet but if any of you ever get a chance to smell an Amazon, you must do it! Lol, I know it sounds odd but they have this musky smell that I think is absolutely wonderful!
“And in today’s news: A middle aged woman was arrested in the bird house of the local zoo for sniffing the birds. As she was dragged from the cage bars she was heard to cry, ‘but I was told to! I want to smell the musky Amazons!'”
BTW: More pix of Darling Lily please. (And the bonded boys too)
Lol! You are always good for a laugh.
My first order of business when I get home tonight is to take plenty of pictures of the bunny gang. . . It’s been too long since I really got any good ones of them. . . . To hold you over until then,
Acorn looks so P.O.ed in that pic! ugh… fur in my eye AGAIN!!! just wait till they bond with Lilly… Acorn will have fur in both of his eyes.
congrats on Pepper! he looks like he’s a lot of fun!
(now were there REALLY 3 birds dumped, or was that a story to get Pepper to you house…? lol!)
LOL, she actually knew they were supposed to be coming but they weren’t supposed to get there until this weekend and she has one of her cages that was supposed to be returned to her before they got there that wasn’t returned yet.
On another note. . . I might be getting an emergency short term foster. . . I posted about it on my bird board, I will just copy that post here. . .
I just got a call from the leader of the rescue Peppers came from. They got in Ceasar not long ago and he is freaking out because there are too many birds around. He has never been a plucker but he started to pluck himself yesterday and she wants to get him out of there as soon as she can so that we can hopefully stop the plucking before it gets really bad. If I decide to foster him, would I need to quarantine him even though he just got out of quarantine there and is coming from the same place Peppers did only a week ago?
Oh yeah, and he is an umbrella cockatoo. I have been saying that I don’t think I am ready for a ‘too but apparently this guy is incredibly sweet and just always wants attention. I’m not sure what to do. Her other fosters all have atleast 3 birds currently and I am the only one with only one and a very quiet one at that.
I’m somewhat worried that if I take him in Peppers will get jealous but it would just be a foster situation so if real troubles came up, I suppose he could always go back.
OMG full house angoragrl!! heheh! I love that pic-Acorn always looks like he’s disapproving of something!! I saw him on disapproving rabbits and showed everyone-what a celeb!!
Congrats on the new bird!! and the new foster!! Any more newbies?? lol!!
Congrats on the new bird!! and the new foster!! Any more newbies?? lol!!
NO! Yeah talk about a full house. . . It’s a good thing I have a good job! No way I would be able to support my family without it. . .Probably a good thing I don’t think I want any human kids either. My house is too full without them!
yay! congrats on your new family member!!! so nice to hear that acorn & henri are bonded now too. it’ll be interesting to read about how it goes adding lilly into the mix. looking forward to new pics of your furry & feathered friends
lol^^
that’s cool you post on a bird forum too! are they a lot like us… just talking about birds instead of buns? birds really seem like they’d be a misunderstood pet like buns. people probably underestimating the time and attention needed, money, interaction, vet care, etc. it’s sad really, but so awesome that you can help them out.
Markusdark,
You beat me to it! I just got back online and when I saw that pix I immediately DL’d it so I could get to work on a caption.
The Lily one is great too….sigh….bunny fix…..sigh
