I’m glad it was easily corrected :~) I know I hate trimming nails! It’s such a chore and I think the claw nails is the most challenging.

Thats great you found out what it was.     Beats treating something for 5 months and getting no where lol.

Your bunny will be ok now.  Thats good.  Nail trims are more difficult with some buns.  Those thumb nails are the worst

Don’t feel bad, we all have nail trimming issues sometimes! And those darned thumb-nails are really hard to get, and then they grow weird directions and everything. Were you able to fix it?

                    That’s good news.
I actually was misinformed once and told not to trim that claw. Poor Spockie had a too long nail there for the longest time.
                    It happens.

Oh very good! More than once I have trimmed nails and released the buns, only to start thinking 15 minutes later… “Did I trim those thumb claws?” So I have to round up the herd again to double-check!

how offen do you trim claws? i was given the impression that the vet could do it when we went in every 10 months for the vaccine and as long as their nails are normal this would be enough

10 months would definitely be too long of a time to wait.   It is advised that they be trimmed every month, but most people can get away waiting a couple of months before it starts to get out of hand.

Long nails can cause sore hocks (as the long nails cause more pressure on the backs of the feet).  They also can get snagged on things and break or rip off, so  it is important to trim them regularly.   If a bunny is normally on carpet then the nail will actually begin to shape into a sharp pointy hook that can really put them at risk for catching on things which can not only break the nail, but it can dislocate or break a toe if it gets caught while running or jumping.

If anyone has let them grow too long, the quick – fleshy part will also grow long and that will prevent you from being able  trim them back as far as they should be right away.  IF that  has happened, you will have to do nail trims more often – like every three weeks over a few months time.  You cut a little less nail during these trims, but it will make the quick recede and so you can eventually get the nail and quick down to a normal level.

                              Ditto -waaay too long

You can get them done at the vet’s -it’s actually quite cheap-like 10-20$ depending. It’s not hard to do yourself but you’ll want to practice ‘bunny burrito’ or ‘bunny trance’ positions for clipping first. It’s not hard at all. I used to need Dave to help me-I can now do nails and anal glands myself in less then ten minutes per bun Just practice and confidence

thats cool, I guess I just never thought about it Anya has to go in for her boost shot in a few weeks so will get them both checked and also get them to teach me, if I can’t do it them I can always go down to my vet down the road (not rabbit savey but will do nail clips on them) which is better then having them in the car for 45 mins!

Totally get your tech to show you That’s perfect

Nail cilips are no biggie-you just have to restrain the bunny (no frantic kicking hence the burrito or the trance) and don’t cut the quick -it’s really simple and routine. BUt I get you-my friend has had her rabbit two years and I still do his nails for her!!
If you lived close to me I would do it for ya

I was very afraid to clip nails for a long time, but when we had to cut back on expenses and I didn’t want to pay the 24 bucks at the vet monthly, I had to bite the bullet and try doing it myself. Now I am a “pro”… I trim both buns about once a month to prevent the quick from getting too long.
