Unspayed female humping newly neutered male

Hi Everyone,

So I’ve been having a really weird experience lately. I recently brought home my newly neutered male from the vet. When I took him to the vet, his sister rode alongside him and they have been getting along extremely well. At home and at the vet they have been grooming each other constantly. They seemed to be doing very well.

Fast forward to now after his neuter surgery. I took them home together and tried to let them out together. Almost immediately, my unspayed doe started humping my neutered buck. I quickly took them apart and separated them again. I tried once more this morning and the exact same thing happened. Immediately she mounted him. It’s like she doesn’t recognize him anymore! Could this be because of the surgery or the vet visit? I’m just curious as to what has happened since she NEVER has tried to mount him in the past. Additionally, like before, she still grooms him through the cage bars if one of them is out and the other one is having exercise time. Talk about bipolar! They were always super friendly with each other. I’m just worried that they don’t love each other anymore

How old is she? Also, how far along is he, post op? He needs some time to recover. If she’s mounting him and he gets pissy, that could escalate a fight and he may injure himself before he has had time to heal.

Males can impregnate up to a month after surgery so you may now have a pregnant female :s

You need to keep them separate, have her spayed and wait for her hormones to disipate. THEN you start pre bonding.

The female is mounting the male in this case! Sorry if I was not clear. And I had thought that they were already bonded since they were doing so well with each other!

They can’t really be bonded unless they are both spayed/neutered. The hormones make it too complicated for them to separate their urges and form a good relationship. LOL sarah is right! I quickly read through the post and thought she was spayed, but yeah since she’s not you really have to keep them separate! How were they grooming each other before? You let them be together without being spayed/neutered? Are you sure she isn’t pregnant, because it can happen very quickly, and it’s very likely she could be if you were allowing them to be together.

I took her to the vet a couple days ago with him and they told me that she was not pregnant. He has not mounted her and I’ve mostly let them interact through a fence under close supervision. I’ve been very careful. I know you all mention that bonding cannot be done before they are neutered/spayed. I am more just asking about the extreme change in behavior that happened with my female bun after the neuter of my male. It’s like night and day and I just don’t really understand it!

You said they can touch one another through the bars, that means they can mate. Just because you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean it wont/hasn’t happened.

In another thread, we were all informed that a buck can impregnate a doe from up to 5 or 6 inches away without any physical contact, which I think fulfills this month’s quota for astounding information. So you need to keep your two buns at least that far away from each other in their cages. You’ve dodged an, ahem *coughcoughcough* bullet so far, keep it that way!

In all seriousness though, yes they can be magical enough to manage mating through a barrier. Don’t ask me how XD but do take precautions. I know you are just asking about her behavior change but we all just want to make sure you aren’t attempting bonding with only one bunny fixed, because they both need to be! I responded to bonding because you said you thought that they had already bonded, but it’s really not a true bond if they are not both altered.
