I just adopted a rescue rabbit from a local rescue group. I was told that my Holland lop is about 10 weeks old. I played with him at the adoption event and everything seemed fine, he was great.
I took him home later that day, placed him in his cage (which was already set up) and then… he started sneezing like crazy. He sits on his hind legs, sneezes uncontrollably for maybe a total of about 30 seconds and then rubs his face with his two front paws. He did this on and off last night. It seems that during the day he doesn’t sneeze at all because yesterday during the day he didn’t and today so far he hasn’t either.
So last night I called the rescue I got him from and I was told that he received a clean bill of health from the vet (he was apparently seen twice for the same thing). She says that it only happens to him at night and she’s not sure what it is. She said that since he’s been seen twice by their rabbit specialist (I was told they take their bunnies to the top rabbit vet in our area), that he is healthy. She also said that before he gets neutered in mid-August, they will have the vet check him out again; and to let her know if anything changes with his sneezing pattern/discharge is seen etc. so she could take him back into the vet right away.
– There is no discharge coming from his nose
– His nose is completely dry when he is having these sneezing fits
– Paws have nothing on them after he wipes his nose with them
– No dust around his nose area
– tried whipping his nose off with a napkin and it didn’t help
– There is no pink around his nose
– Thinking he might be allergic to the Alfalfa hay he has in his litter box but I know that young rabbits must have Alfalfa in their diet so I wouldn’t know if this is true or not until he ages
My question is this: Has anyone else seen this before, or does anyone have any suggestions? I am also worried that he might have something wrong with him because I know sneezing like that is not normal. If I keep him would that mean I am taking my chances or should I just return him to the rabbit rescue? (BTW, I was not told he had any problems when I adopted him from the rescue, I would have waited to adopt another bunny if that was the case).
