Unaltered opposite sex bunnies together

Hi,

I’m the new to the bunny world and need advice. I’ve had both of bunnies Hunter (3 1/2 months) and Luna (3 months) since they were 8 weeks old. They’ve been kept together in an indoor 3 tier cage since I got them as they bonded together tremendously well and didn’t have the heart to separate them. I’m getting Hunter altered next week and want some advice for living arrangements afterwards. I know your not meant to keep them together unaltered, but they bond so well. They cuddle together, munch happily, hop and jump around and seem completely content and happy, plus I’ve never seen any aggression from either bunnies towards each other.

Is it best to separate them both after getting hunter done and reintroduce them after Luna has been done? Or separate them for a few weeks and reintroduce them and then do the same principle for when Luna has been done.

I’m planning on getting Luna as soon as my vet think she’s ready.

I would separate them immediately to avoid accidental matings. They’ll have to be kept separated until they are both fixed and clear of hormones anyways, so I think it’s best to set up two cages and let them out at different times… better to be safe than sorry

For one, babies cant bond. Babies can make friends because they get along with everyone, but they do not create actual bonds. For two, keeping them together at this age and youre risking pregnancy. Intentional breeding like this is not allowed on the website. If you plan to keep them together for a litter, youll want to seek out other rabbit related websites, like rabbit.org’s forum. If you dont intend to breed, youll need to separate them now.

Youll separate them atleast a foot apart. Rabbits can breed through bars and males can shoot sperm pretty far. Hormonal rabbits have two moods: breed and fight. Both will need to be fixed (and given two months to heal) before you can safely and successfully bond them. If you only fix one before trying to bond, youre very likely to end up with bloodied rabbits as they fight for territory and breeding rights, as fixed rabbits will act out hormonally around hormonal rabbits. To leave one last note, the more often that they end up fighting, the less likely they will bond in the future.
