› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Ummm… he aint no Holland Lop! – UPDATED WITH PICS! :D
So I was finally able to weigh Zeus. Yay! I’m visiting my parents’ house right now and they have a scale. So I weighed myself, then weighed myself holding the pet carrier, then weighed myself holding the carrier with Zeus inside. By subtraction I was able to figure out Zeus’s weight.
Anyone wanna guess?
Drumroll please…
…
.. and Zeus’s weight is….
…
10 pounds!
I was so surprised! This was the bun who was advertised as a “Holland Lop”. Ummm… no way. Unless he’s some mutant gigantic variation of a Holland Lop, I’m not buying it! I originally guessed his breed as a Mini Lop.. but ARBA says max weight for Mini Lops are 6.5lbs. I know pet quality buns are typically a bit bigger than show buns, but I’m thinking an extra 4.5lbs means Zeus is not 100% Mini Lop… and I’d be VERY surprised if he has any Holland Lop in him at all!
So now.. what is he?! I researched French Lops and their weight range is typically 10-12lbs. So perhaps Zeus is a French Lop? Or a French/Mini Lop cross? Guesses? Ideas? My Zeus is large and in charge!
He doesn’t look so big from the photos! That method can be a little inaccurate, too, you may be a pound off, at least I know it always has been with the cats/dogs. Unless they have a kitchen scale you probably won’t get an exact measurement outside of the vets. Still, though, I’m surprised just from looking at him! I don’t know about breeds to try to guess, really, but I know so many pets are mixes so… not too surprising?

Yeah but even if it’s a pound off or something, that still puts him well above the range for Mini Lops.. so I really have no clue what he is now! .
And yeah from photos he looks pretty small, but he is the size of a small cat. I’m still very surprised at his weight though! I guess he’s much more compact and dense than I thought.
I wouldn’t judge by ARBA standards. Their standards are for show bunnies, they won’t show pasta certain weight range. So he could still be a mini lop, just a larger one. Chacha is a nethie for example, but a false dwarf. She didn’t get the itty bitty gene.
I agree with Monkey. Breed standards are what is expected/required of show quality bunnies. Very few of the bunnies on this site would qualify as show quality. And even if a bunny LOOKS like a purebred whatever… it is very likely there is a different breed somewhere in their lineage. So I highly doubt that Zeus is purebred, and because of this, his weight/appearance could be anything. He’s a beautiful bunny, that’s all that matters.

I’m just trying to figure what mix he could be, since my original idea of Mini Lop seems less likely considering his weight. If he was near the ARBA guidelines it’d be one thing, but since he’s 4+ pounds heavier, I’m curious to figure out what he could be. I find all the different breeds and their differences interesting and trying to figure out what he is, is fun research to me.
Well, at 9 – 10 pounds, you are right he’s not a Holland Lop. He could be just a very large mini lop or a mix between a Mini and French.
A 10 pound Lop — BEAUTIFUL!
You’ll need to update his photo so it shows off his size more -so we can appreciate what a big guy he is.
Mini should be giant lop I think that Hollands are, the smallest, if I am mistaken? O_o Please correct me if I am wrong.
Haha, Monkeybun is right
Chacha is somewhere in the 3 pound range. Her wittle sister Eva is the typical 1.5-2 pound dwarf.
Yes, Holland Lops are the smallest and then “Mini” being the next size up. It’s Goofy!.
Has Zeus been seen by a vet yet? Perhaps your vet can tell you what breed he is
I wanna see more photos of him

Yeah I know everyone thinks he’s a little guy by that picture! It’s decieving. . I’ll definitely try and get a better pic to show off his “largeness”.

Not yet no, I was going to bring him in for nail trims but he’s turned out to be a total saint about it and will let me do it. I’m hoping maybe by the end of the summer I can afford to bring him in for a general checkup, but for now he’s a healthy happy boy so no immediate vet appointments required, thank goodness!
And I will definitely take some more photos of him asap!

To show off how tiny Monkey is, I took pics of her with a regular sized soda can
You could do the same with Zeus
OMG Monkeybun I just started laughing.. because I just totally took a pic of Zeus next to a Pepsi can before even reading your reply! Hahahaha! Mind reader!
Without further ado, Zeus pics!
He’s a bit bigger than your adoreable bun Monkeybun, haha! .
Zeus’s most common position.. begging for pets! .
He’s not a lop, I swear! Hahaha. .
oh he is cute!!!! i don’t think he is a Holland lop.

Thank you! Yeah I’m quite sure he’s not a Holland Lop. It sounds like from the general consensus, he’s either a very large Mini Lop, or a Mini/French Lop cross. I’m surprised he might be a crossbreed because he has a tattoo and came from a breeder, but maybe some breed crossbreeds? I don’t know the rabbit industry well at all so I don’t know!
Here’s my frenchie next to a water bottle lol.. I def think Zeus has some french in him
He also has the same shape head as my Duke…
Hurray! Lets have a thread of bunnies in size comparison to water bottles and soda cans
I tend to see lots of breeders giving up bunnies that are not ‘show bunny’ quality. It is really sad. That is how I got my ChaCha. She wasn’t small, but is like her mother, Ok (yes that is her mother’s name, BLAH, how UNCREATIVE), but anyways, ChaCha is my treasure.
Monkeybun has a true dwarf The small head, small body
This was taken perhaps 2 months ago.. ChaCha in comparison with a BinkyBunny Willowball:
She has a bigger head, longer front legs, and long ears (The diva likes to pose)
With my tea bottle. Look at that cilantro go bye bye This was taken tonight.
Before I found ChaCha, I was considering a mini lop rabbit. It was white and orange. And then I found that I was more attracted to a Nethie. In the future, I plan to most likely get a lop – and I will go to a shelter I like the small breeds
I think that all bunnies are beautiful, cross bred, false, and whatnot
Let us know what type Zeus is!!
Looks like Zeus has a twin brother someplace
Zeus is darling
I can has him?
Thank you for the updated pics of Zeus! Your other pic doesn’t show off his beautiful chocolate brown color as well… I thought he was more of a gray before!
He’s a handsome boy.
MB, I just had to save that pix of Monkey. I was telling my folks stories about how she met Moose and your captioning his cries of “get that thing off of me!” They were hysterical.
don’t mean to hijack thread.
Spockie was a Mini Rex I was told, though not a purebred at all. When he tipped the scale at 8 lbs. I though “Mini? In what universe????” It does make you wonder, especially if you’ve been told one thing and they keep growing…and growing…and growing.
Just be sure he isn’t growing due to fatness. If it’s his healthy weight and he’s exercising and solid, then he may not be a Holland but he’s a Mini in Lop language. His parents were a mix undoubtedly, and he may just take after the bigger of the two.
Zeus is adorable. I love the begging for pets picture.
Ashleyyy, wow! Duke and Zeus are long lost twins! .

I’m fairly sure he’s not fat, as he only gets 1/3 cup pellets per day, and the only treat he gets is carrots, and I ration those, too.

Thank you! He’s very good at smushing down and looking adoreable so I can’t resist petting him.

That’s how I got Duke also. His teeth were “crooked” from chewing on the bars when she had him. They’re perfect now though. I don’t even want to say what she implied would happen to him if I wouldn’t have taken him…
And Zeus and Duke are twins! Haha, Duke does the smush thing too, but he’s not super fond of being pet lol Once in a while he will allow me to

Yeah I got Zeus because his family moved and they didn’t want to bring him with.. I don’t understand how you can leave pets behind when you move.
Zeus loooooves to be pet! He follows me around the house like a dog, and recently has discovered if he walks up and rests his head in the crook of my elbow (I usually sit on the floor typing on my laptop), I’ll find his little smushed face on my arm too adoreable to ignore. Little stinker knows just how to manipulate me!
Zeus is striking. I love French Lops, like Ashleyy’s — wow. What beauties. We don’t see them on here too often. I love Zeus dark brown coloring.

Oo, you lay on the ground and use your laptop too?
Chachas has a few times walked over my laptop keyboard and typed a few things to my bestie on facebook. How silly. My bestfriend said “HI CHACHA!!”
