does anyone know about umbilical herneas in rabbits. I knew laith was in pain me or the vet just couldn’t figure out why. actually but he was sitting hunched a lot. and wasn’t all that active. he did tooth purs a lot could have been from pain I just dont’ know.

anyway laith is no longer with us. he went to bunny meadows I feel so bad I sure miss him shame. it was merciful for him he went quick. poor little guy. so sad. my hubby told me is congenital and yes they can tie up and he can die from  it being tied up. I forget the word he used oh putrify I think it was. poor little boy he never was bouncy an so forth now I know why. I knew something was wrong with him I just knew you know you get that feeling that they aren’t acting normally. that something is just not quite right.  he had been feeling bad for a long time. I never knew exactly why. now I do and I am glad it was merciful for him. I can’t stand for them to be in pain like that I just can’t not fair to him.

well I still have our cotton and he is very healthy thank you God for that. it is hard to lose a bun. he was so sweet and pretty.

That’s just heartbreaking. I’m so sorry. This was the little guy who wouldn’t eat hay? Now we know why. Again I’m so sorry.

Umbilical hernias can be hereditary.  But they also can be trauma induced.  An umbilical hernia is an opening in the abdominal wall- if some of the intestines pass thru they can get strangulated in the “hole” and that will cause the intestinal tissue to die.

Injuries such as a hit by car can create a tear in the abdominal wall- even without an external injury in that spot.  I saw this in a cat once at the clinic where I  work

I suppose with rabbits it would be very hard to find the typical “bulge” that indicates a hernia- as they are typically located on the abdomen- but could be on the rabbits side below ribs. Most buns are not too thrilled with a belly rub- combine that with thick fur and a small hernia woud not be glaringly obvious.

So sorry to hear about your loss- thanks for sharing.  I will be sure to have my vet specifically palpate my bunnies abdomen when she is spayed in a couple of months.  If she is asleep- they should be able to feel any gaps in the abdominal wall if they are there.  I had not even thought of this oreviously.

I am very hard to hear about Laith, how very sad. Please give Cotton lots of love, since it’s very lonely to lose your bonded friend and can lead to serious problems from the depression like not eating.

KatnipCrzy – thanks for posting about umbilical hernias since I never knew about them.

thank you all now I feel like crying all over again. I miss him I catch myselt still talking to him or telling him goodnite as I go thru the ritual good nite laith goodnite cotton just so weird not to see him in the mornings too

cotton seems to be fine he is eating good and playing and coming for rubs. he was jealous. I thought he was a little sad yesterday but he is bouncing today I be sure and love him up and play with him and keep an eye on him

yes poor little laith no wonder he wouldn’t eat his hay. awe it was a big hernea a lot of intesting was out of place and a piece of fat or something seemed to have wrapped the center of it holding it inside. at least he went fast. I just knew somethign wasn’t right. cute little fellow well no pain for him now may he be happy where he is at now. may God take good care of him let him run and play with other bunnies in fields of flowers and meadows with no worries now.
