        Hi everyone

We have just discovered mice in our house. They don’t seem to be living in the rabbit room, so I’m not worried about them infecting/bothering my bunny. However, they do tend to enjoy scurrying across our kitchen floor (eek!). To solve this, I’ve looked into ultrasonic pest repellents. Basically you plug them in and them emit a high frequency sound that deters the mice away from the house. While humans can’t hear the sound, I’m worried that my bunny’s ears will be damaged by the frequency. Does anyone have any experience with this type of pest control, or know the frequencies that a rabbit can tolerate?

        Thanks!

I don’t have any experience with those devices myself but I do know from my studies and personal observation that rabbits really don’t like very high-pitched noises. I was cooking hot dogs last evening and the smoke from the grill pan caused the smoke alarm to go off, sending my bunnies scampering for cover in their hidey boxes; I had to open up the door to let the cooking smoke out to get the alarm to shut off *rolls eyes*, but fortunately the buns calmed down almost as soon as it turned off.

I remember seeing these advertised on home shopping channels years ago. They said that they couldn’t be used if you had hamsters, Guinea pigs or any kind of pet in the rodent family. Rabbits aren’t in the rodent family, so those would have been safe for them, but I don’t know if the ultrasonic pest repellers are the same now as they were back then.

There is probably a phone number or email on the package, if you see these in a store, or you could find the info online if you are ordering them. Why don’t you contact the company and ask if they are safe for rabbits?

A few years ago I visited my grandparents and they had just gotten one of these. They were all proud and tried to show us how it worked on the squirrels in the fruit tree. I was standing next to it and it was SO LOUD AND PAINFUL. I yelled “What is that noise?!?! Turn it off, turn it off!”

They replied, “Oh isn’t it great, it’s inaudible!”

So these can also work as young people deterrents. Speaking from experience, I wouldn’t submit your rabbits to that kind of ear torture if they can hear it!
