UGH cutting nails

 It is almost impossible for me to cut my bunnys nails, he doesnt sit still when i put him on his back and he freaks out and trys to get away, i just tried cuting them and got only 2 of his nails and my hands look like they are torn apart because of all the scratches …..how am i supposed to cut his nails if he wont let me?! its really frusturating bc they are long and have been giving me cuts that bleed what do i do?

Do you have a friend that could help you out? It is really the easiest way (one holds, one cuts). If you don’t though, you could try a bunny burrito (wrapped in a blanket or towel) and pull one paw out at a time for trimming. Or place him up on a highish surface (be careful he doesn’t bolt off it) like a table, they tend to not thrash about quite as badly if they are up high. If all else fails, the vet will do it for you for a few dollars usually.

mine hates the burrito and going on his back. And I only occasionally have help. So I hold him with one hand and clip with the other and kinda use my chest to make sure he doesn’t jump. Obviously this isn’t ideal and if I had the money, I would spend the $15 dollars and let the vet tech do it every month but I’m on a budget. If I do have a helper aka the bf. He usually pets bunjamin and sometimes distracts him from what I’m doing. The best tip though is to do it in a room your bunny is not familiar with but not one that’s super loud or something that would scare him. Hopefully this helps.

Also, If your bun doesn’t mind you touching his paws during pet time you could also just try sneaking a clip here or there like some members on here do. Bunjamin doesn’t like his paws touched so that doesn’t work for me.

I have a hard time with this also.
I find it easiest to do the high table thing.

Usually I give him food and cut as many nails as he will let me before he gets tired of me, which means nail clipping can take days. Now I just take him to the vet and let them clip his nails when they trim his teeth, its a lot easier for me.

Do you have a helper? I couldn’t do either of mine by myself, but with another person it’s not bad at all.

I find that different techniques work for different bunnies. My boy is relatively ok being picked up, so one person holds him, back against the holder’s chest and feet sticking straight out, one hand on his chest and one hand under his bum.

My other rabbit hates to be held, so I put her on a counter top with a towel. One person holds her down by wrapping her lightly in the towel and applying a little pressure to her shoulders, while the other person pulls her feet out once at a time.

Neither of mine would ever let me do it while they were on their backs, so just try new methods until you find the easiest one for your rabbit. Going to the vet and having them show you how to do it is also really helpful. I had mine done by the vet for a year or two before I could easily do it myself.

I have to have my dad hold Molly while I trim. She HATES it, but thats the only way. Tried the bunny burrito, tried doing it while she sits there and eats, nothing worked. That being said, I dread nail trimming time :/
