I am wanting to make my buns a new cage…I wanted to get them the cube things, but I already have 3 cages in my apartment that would go to waste, and I have been wanting to make them a bigger cage anyway. The rough measurements are: top one is 39in long X 2ft wide X 14 in tall, the blue cage is 28in long X 16.5in wide X 15.5in tall, the green one is 39in long X 17in wide X 20.5 tall. What is the best way to connect them etc.? Any help would be much appreciated! I just want something a little bigger for them than the top pic, their cage door is open all day so they dont spend the majority of their time there, but something more comfortable for them at night.

If you use the cube grid things, you can build tall instead of wide so they have lots of room but it won’t take up too much floor space. Take a look at the “cool habitats” section of “bunny info” on the website for some ideas

Oh and if you have the floor space, a lot of people keep their original cages and get an x-pen (dog pen) or make a similar enclosure to go around the original cage so that the bunnies still have their cage to go in when they want, but also have lots of room to stretch out and do bunny things

            Kind of like this:

I’m pro-X pen myself. Easy to setup, easy to clean, roomy, cost effective.

Is there a good place to find those?

petco or petsmart. Mine was about $75 and it makes a 4×4 square. You will have to figure out some type of flooring. Alot of people use a piece of linoleum. I put down plywood with stick on tiles. I like that you can actually get inside to clean it. Or you can dissemble it easily to clean out all the corners of where your bun might have flung poops or hay. Beka’s the resident x pen expert, but since having one, I wouldn’t have any other system to keep my rabbits.

mrflais – the san diego house rabbit society sometimes sells pre-owned cages/pens and carriers for pretty cheap too if you want to try them… they have a HRS store the first 4 saturdays of every month.

The HRS store here is fantastic… you can get lots of neat bunny supplies and they support rescues, neuters, etc. with some of the profits. And getting hay there is fantastic – a giant box of mixed hays is $10 and lasts a lot longer for a lot better value than you can get in pet stores.

Here’s the page for the store: http://www.sandiegorabbits.org/products/office_store.html

You can always try craigslist too.

I hear ya about making use of what you have.  I had a dog cage for my bunny.  I removed the top and built up w/ the cube thingys.  I overlapped them so they were the same length & width of the dog cage.  I used the grid thingys for the floors as well.  I eventually covered the floors w/ cardboard and ragrugs.  I believe that my original dog cage turned multi-level home is in the gallery w/ my Jessica sitting on the top floor (black netherland).

When Leo moved in, we took out a side wall of the dog cage and added out & up, stealing some ideas from the member that built little cube spaces out from misc levels.  Sorry, hard to explain.  For the dog cage we bought a pair of inexpensive bolt cutters to cut through the cage for the expansion.

Dig:  I wish I lived in San Diego….excellent HRS & awesome weather…boy the eastcoast sucks!

Thats my thing, I would rather but some tools and things and do something myself with it. I am originally from ohio so I know how the weather can be over there!

Yeah, I’m not quite sure how you could connect those since they’re all different sizes. You could always clean them up very well and try to sell them for a few bucks on craigslist, then put the money towards other caging or get an xpen. I do love xpens. They are super easy to set-up (less than five minutes) and I can lift them out of the way to clean the corners where hay and fur tend to collect. If you ever stop using it, I think they have great resale value, or you can fold them up and store in a closet for the future.

Condos are popular too and you have more options for levels and personalization, but it takes building materials, time, and some imagination.

You might even be able to trade your old cages for a couple of x-pens.
